Anyone familiar with the Malmsteen strats?

I'm going to make a clone out of my Pro Tone I have lying around with a Warmoth neck (I'm lefty, can't buy a real one). I believe the nut is brass and 42mm, but can anyone tell me about the neck profile? Is it more or less "standard" strat?

Good point, I usually play RG's so the Wizard profile would seem natural but I don't know how that would work with a scalloped fretboard. A normal strat also feels good in my hands as well.

I know that my least favorite neck profile is my Kramer American "claw" neck, thing's like a baseball bat.

The malmsteen is wide and flat. It is like a slightly thicker wizzard.
It has HUGE frets, and it was very dense and didnt resonate very much.
I would suggest if you are having one made, have it made to your favorite specs "you will like it better". By the time you put his pickups in it, it will sound like his strat.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Malmsteen strats?

I've owned four of them. Fabulous guitars. The neck profile is a "C" shape - thinner than standard strats, but still nowhere as thin as a wizard or wizard II profile.

The YJM is the only model offered by FMIC with Dunlop Super-Jumbo #6000 frets. These are basically bass guitar frets on a scalloped one-piece maple neck (or rosewood slab)

The 42mm nut is solid brass and the pickups are DiMarzio stacked humbuckers.
The body is two-piece alder with an offsett seam - this is the only strat that is not a Custom Shop model to have this feature - very expensive to manufacture.

I've had over 20 Strats from $200.00 MIM's to $4,000.00 Custom Shop models and all 4 of my YJM's were among the top strats in the collection for playability, weight and tone.

A candy apple red Malmsteen Strat will be next on my list, after the candy apple red Eric Johnson. And the Tele. And the 335.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Malmsteen strats?

thanks for the info Jemaholic! Warmoth only goes to Dunlop 6100, so I guess I gotta settle for that. I'm excited to try scalloped, you don't see many lefties with it...if ever.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Malmsteen strats?

Loved my 2003 Malmsteen USA Strat to bits and regret selling it all the time. It sounded great and had a nice feel and weight to it too. Mine was white with a rosewood board. I'd definitely consider owning another if I ever got the chance at a reasonable price.
