Question

Charvel model 4 vs. Epi Les Paul Standard

I currently own a charvel model 4, i love the fast neck, but im disliking the tone without a metal zone or metal core. I have the choice to sell this guitar and buy (if you look on musicians friend) Epiphone Limited Edition Les Paul Standard Sparkle Flake Electric Guitar, or keeping my model 4. the reviews say it takes some setting up for the epi, but i've been fixing guitars for a long time, so no trouble there. Any Advice???

You really need to have a sit down and a think about this as they're very different guitars.

If you like the feel of your current guitar then I'd advise upgrading the electronics rather than part chopping it on a guitar that is very different in looks, feel and style from what you know you like.

I'd keep the Model 4. I had an Epiphone and I hated it, the worst guitar I have ever owned, but it was a crappy LP Special II so I'm not sure about higher end Epi's though. I just got a Charvel 275DLX a few weeks ago and probably the best guitar I have now. Personally I would love to have a Model 4, but it depends on your preference.

Keep the Model 4 and do a pickup swap.

Epi special II's are not worth the box they come in but my Epi standard LP is a quite nice guitar, the stock pickups are kinda muddy, but passable. If you know how to do setups & wiring Epis are great.

I swapped the potted Epi pups in my LP Standard for a '59/Jazz combo and the guitar sprung to life. I love it.

I fitted an old Epi LP Custom in white with a set of Dimarzio X2N pickups and the guitar sounded amazing.

I currently own a '86 Charvel Model 4 with the Kahler, a typical Jap made guitar, which is far better build quality. A pickup swap is your best option i would think.

Epiphones (especially the higher end ones) are pretty good guitars, but they are substantially different from the Charvel.

My advice: Keep the Charvel, save up, and nab a nice Agile.

Bacchus in Japan make some top quality Les Pauls. You could pick one up on **** used, for the same price as a new Epi.
