Cheap Tele suggestions

I just bought a Yamaha Saxamophone for my daughter Lisa ...no, my daughter Aoife , so my early 80's Artist funds are almost gone. I was hoping to get a nice hardtail guitar and I'm now looking at getting a Tele. I had one in the 70's and it was nice, so why not?

So, if you wanted a maple fretboard and had 300 to spend, where would you guys all be looking?

The usual suspects, I guess, evil bay, craigslist for used ones.

Consider a Squire or find another hundred bucks for a Mexican Strat. The cheapy Fenders are decent guitars. Oh, and Guitar Center has been selling older Highway Ones for good prices. I got a Hwy1 strat for $430.

Good luck.

An older Highway 1 would be cool though...I'll have to check some stores I guess.

Sings: Saxamaphone... Saxamaphone...

Anyway, the bay of evil quite often has the Japanese made Squiers from the mid to late 80s in the $300 to $400 range, sometimes a little cheaper. That's certainly a good route to go.

Has anyone ever heard of this company, Hefner? they make licensed Fender bodies. I might just buy a body for my MIM Strat and convert it or something.

I'm pretty sure Telecaster and Stratocaster neck joints are really different. Besides, you might end up going over when you add the finish price and the hardware you can't use because it is the wrong shape or size.

Eh It's a Charvel Model series neck, so it should fit close enough so that it doesn't move.

Re: Cheap Tele suggestions

Hohner made a great tele copy (TE Custom, I think), but they are modeled after the 60s custom, so no maple. If rosewood doesn't bother you, they seem to be a great choice for a cheap tele knockoff...

Re: Cheap Tele suggestions

You can get a used MIM Tele in that range, and you can tweak it as funds become available.

Re: Cheap Tele suggestions

You could build your own Saga Tele kit, if you wanted to. They're relatively cheap.
