Check this out...

Suhr guitars is developing a process to 'vulcanize' maple necks that supposedly makes them basically impervious to water, moisture, humidity, and pretty much anything that affects the neck. What I read said they basically were able to dip it in water and it wouldn't even absorb any. The neck in these pics below is a maple neck with a pau ferro fretboard. The process makes the neck look basically like rosewood. Pretty interesting stuff...

Interesting...

I read a couple of months back where Suhr had also applied for a patent regarding Suhr's method of measuring vibration in a given piece of wood.

The point of the method was to be able to match necks with bodies based on the amount of vibration.

Very cool. That Suhr is sweet looking.

I have heard that drum stick manufactures pair up drum sticks using vibration and tone. Makes sense you could do it with guitars too.

That is a really cool concept. It will be very interesting to see some of the new things that will be coming out over the next few years due to some new technologies, and plain ol' wood and metal may start to become a thing of the past.

Whilst it will indeed be interesting to see what happens with new technologies, the whole vintage guitar market says that wood and metal is very much where guitars will always be at.

I'm not so interested in the new water repellant properties of these necks so much as the feel!

Anyone got to try one yet?

AND moving this to the "other 6 strings" forum ...

Yeah, I was debating about where to put it, I decided it was just a technology thread, not a "Suhr" thread, so maybe the gear and equipment section would have been better. Cool technology nonetheless, and I totally agree, the vintage market does definitely say that wood and wire is here for the long haul no matter what else comes along.

Should be interesting to see how that neck sounds.
Might be similar to a Steinberger neck in energy tranfer properties.

I'd like to hear one.

Next thing you know guitar makers are going to be using man-made petrified wood for necks.
