California to England is $115 through USPS.

California to Florida is $34 UPS Ground.

I'd say you paid too much.

Unless you put a few gold bars in the case, that's insane. I've never had a guitar cost more than $45 thru the Post Office to ship domestically, and that's with $1800 insurance and Priority Mail.

What did you value your insurance at?

The overall weight and the size can make a big difference. What guitar are we talking about, a triple neck?

Yeah, totally ripped off. Normal shipping with a box just a bit bigger than a standard case (so the case will fit in snug) should be less than $40 in the USA. I shipped a guitar to France with insurance and it only cost like $95.

Re: Cost of shipping a guitar from LA to Kansas City

It was a schecter hellraiser

There were chips on the bass side of the fretboard and unfinished paint on the headstock

I didnt put any insurance on it so its just based on distance and size

The measurements were L51xW28xH6, it weighed 16 pounds

I still have the receipt

Will I complain about it to the post office?

Instead of starting a thread all you had to do was use the online calculator

http://postcalc.usps.gov/

$84

Re: Cost of shipping a guitar from LA to Kansas City

You may have used a much bigger box than you had to, and it may have justified as oversized which is where the price came from. A standard case is like 24 wide, 48 long and 5 high...(this is a guess but probably close, I don't have a measuring tape) Oh, and mine was a Hellraiser 7 too...

Re: Cost of shipping a guitar from LA to Kansas City

I forgot to tell the whole story

Sorry lads

I bought a hellraiser schecter 6 string from musicians friend

When I got it I was so unhappy about it

There were blemishes all over the neck and the headstock was unfinished partially and there was wear on the bass side to the fretboard

I filed for a return to get a new one in exchange for the poor quality one

And then this leads me to the USPS problem in which I had to ship it the way it was shipped to me and I never thought it would have been so expensive
Its not heavy and its not over international waters as I have purchased a guitar from overseas and it never amounted to that much unless I got insurance on it

It boggles my mind

But ever since I left Ireland to come to LA I have found it to be sh*te

I have never had so many problems

Sidetrack *you don't have to read this part*
I went to open a bank account in Bank of Am****a and they told me that my ATM card would arrive in 5 to 7 working days
12 working days later I call down to the bank and they then send me to customer service (a telephone) no customer service in the bank wtf
Anyways I ring them up and they told me "we sent it to blah blah blah my home address in IRELAND"
Then my parents back home recieve this ATM card in the post and are like wtf and ring the bank
In the end they got a complaint and I got my card after a month as the card had to be sent to the bank of am****a for further processing
I was eating outta Mc Donalds for those weeks so I could pay rent and food
That was a long sidetrack
Sorry if I upset anyone

Except those aren't the dimensions you gave above, and with double oversize there is only one postal option.

That's awesome! I'm glad that worked out for you man. Hopefully this'll turn your luck around while you're here in the States.
