General opinion on cheap ESPs?

How do people think they shape up compared to cheap Ibanezes? I tried a friend's ESP LTD M-50 yesterday (agathis body, vintage strat-style trem & bolt-on) and they're surprisingly nice. Not quite as lovely a neck feel but sufficient for my needs, and smooth enough.

I might consider an M-100 when the new models come out in Black Cherry.

Cheap ibanez's are way better, I think most LTDs have painted necks for a reason, you probably wouldn't want to buy it if you saw the wood underneath.

The HZ's are maybe a bit better the cheap iby pups but there is only one HZ model used for bridge and neck so I find the neck pup useless.

My MH-1000 had a painted neck and I removed it and it looked fine. Perfectly quartersawn 3 piece maple neck.

I dont think there is much difference between them. A cheap guitar is a cheap guitar, they are probably both made in the same factory.

They're both made in Indonesia I think.

What's wrong with 'LTD'? In fact, what's in a name?

In the sub £400 range, do any guitars have good floyds? All I hear from people about this price range is don't get this guitar, the tremolo sucks.

It's all about the image that companies are trying to uphold. Cheaply made fenders are branded squires and cheaply made gibson's are branded epiphone. Those companies feel they have an image to uphold so they reserve their brand name for "quality" guitars.
Ibanez doesn't feel the same way obviously.
You don't just see it in the guitar world.
Lexus=Toyota
Acura=Honda
Etc.

It's really just a way to sell to certain markets. No biggie really.
I'd buy an LTD. I don't think I could bring myself to buy one of the agathis-bodied ones though. I do really like the vipers. I plan on getting one someday.

Re: General opinion on cheap ESPs?

I own an ESP M-II Urban Camo, and it is hands down the best playing guitar I own. I've had people pick it up and play it and comment on how it seems to play itself.

I've played quite a few ESPs and LTDs, and I think LTDs are a great buy for the dollar.

The LTD Deluxe series, you can't go wrong. I'm sure there are some LTDs out there that blow, though.

I think they're talking about cheap LTDs like the 50 and 100 series, not the 1000. I have an M-1000, and i agree, it's top shelf, especially for the money. But we're getting offtopic.
