Gibson SG (my guitars), any fans?

Hello,

We finally decided today that my singers much neglected Gibson SG should be playable (he really doesn't take care of guitars) so I took it home and cleaned it, played with the truss rod and the bridge and finally got it in playable condition. First time I've ever played one, just wondering if anyone on the forum is a fan of these? I quite like it so far, been playing on it all night, but the pickups are not as hot as I'd like (but I'm used to EMG's, so no surprise there).

I'm taking this on my bands next tour (with Black Stone Cherry, check us out www.myspace.com/serpicoband, is there anything I should watch out for? I've heard SG's are notorious for breaking at the neck, how easy is it for that to happen?

Here's a nice pic

Joe

Dont drop it or smack the head against anything and it will be fine. Just about all Gibsons have a weak area where the headstock joins the neck.
I have a 61RI that is a great guitar. I like it much more than I thought I would

Yeah... They're notoriously weak at the neck. I've actually pulled the neck off one once..... Wasn't mine. My friend was pissed.

The headstock flew right off my SG Junior when it fell off a stand, but it was on old early 60's guitar. Like Cid said, just don't drop it and she'll be fine.

Cool! I've never been much of an SG guy though.

Cool, should be fine, it'll either be in its case, in a rack of 5 other guitars or in my hands on tour so it shouldn't be in any danger.

After playing with it for a little longer, I really like the clean sounds on this But the distortion is a little hollow for my tastes. I would really like to hear this guitar with different pickups in it. Maybe not EMG's but something meatier... maybe a DiMarzio Tone Zone?

Nice Eclipse's mate. Are they ESP's or LTD's ?

Old scholl Dimarzio super distortion sounds good in an SG in my experience.

Skinny, flexible guitars - not really noted for tuning stability (at least in my hands) - I have had a mid seventies SG Standard, and a '64 SG Standard - both sounded great, but man, getting through an entire song with either one still in tune demanded skills I am yet to learn!

Oh, yeah, they snap at the headstock very easily - keep in a stand (preferrably locking) and if the guitar is travelling in anything other than a road case, just check that when it is sitting in the case that the tip/back of the headstock isn't touching the case - they are much less damage prone while travelling if the headstock is completely suspended inside the case.

Sadly just LTD's But an ESP Eclipse is definitely on my list of guitars to buy. I really like that guitar and it plays pretty damn well but the strings come out of the saddles occasionally when you play aggressively and both the strap pins on the red one came out and had to be wood-fillered in.

David McCarroll,

I'll check the case I've got just now, and if its not suitable see if I can sort out another one before Saturday (next tour). Failing that, it can just ride up front with us in the seats instead of in the back

Cheers everyone

Actually all you need to do is put a bit of padding in the neck rest area to raise the back of the headstock - the current Gibson cases are pretty good in any case. If padding is the solution, make sure it is something like a thick cotton sock or the ilk - foam rubber will actually eat a Nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and with Gibsons, it can be Nitro or Urethane, you can never really tell!
