Grossly overpriced

Actually the title is a bit misleading....

I went to Guitar Center (Yeah, I know...time to gag) a few weeks ago where I tried out a EB/MM JPM. I posted my experience with it and a Mesa/Boogie F-50 at the time. Anyway, what I forgot to detail in my post about it is that the Guitar Center tag on the guitar said that it was $9999.99 RETAIL but $1795.99 GUITAR CENTER PRICE thus you save around eight grand.

I really hate that chain. The only reason I shop there is out of convenience or else I'd be doing all my other guitar accessory shopping somewhere else. (Yes, I don't buy guitars from there)

Re: Grossly overpriced

I've seen that occasionally but it just means they didn't know the actual list or that someone just put it in the computer at 9999.99 and printed the label like that.

Re: Grossly overpriced

That better be the case. Nevertheless, it is still very misleading to uninformed buyers; almost on the edge of false advertising.

If you don't know the retail price, then you don't put it on or you call the distributor and ask .

Yeah that's what I say too.... they should just put $0 retail because it would make sense if they have to put something there...

I like how they hype the crap out of their so-called sales. You'll see 65% off!.....Yeah, off LIST! In REALITY, they are actually selling the damned thing for the same price eveybody else in town is, on any given day!

Re: Grossly overpriced

That's just the way distributors want dealers to do. Aside from a handful of companies, most places have these stupidly high list prices and give dealers some sort of discount structure from it. A Jem 7V up here in Canada lists for close to $5000, but retails in stores for about the $2500 area. It's essentially a big marketing thing because companies know people are cheap skates and want a deal every single time and for those folks who don't know better, 65% off list price sounds like a really big discount.

Interestingly enough, has anyone found it strange how some companies use the word RETAIL PRICE when they mean LIST PRICE?

You got it. The idea is to make you believe ("con") you into believing that you got a special deal because everyone thinks they should get that.

The reason they equate list and retail price is because anything off list/retail to them is a "sale" or "discount". But that's pretty bogus because rarely do "retailers" ,as they are called, sell at retail/list because the wholesale is so many points lower than the margin they need (or could move merchandise).

Re: Grossly overpriced

Well.. I'm pretty sure every retailler wishes they could sell thier stuff at full blown list/retail to make more money, but we're all too smart for that stuff. However, I should point out that I've seen some shops where they ONLY list the retail list price on thier guitars and expect customers to come in a haggle thier way down to what other places are selling it for. Definitely a shop where customers have bigger wallets than brains.

If you can't nit-pick on a forum, where can you nit-pick? And is nit-picking a new shred picking technique for super-chops?

They mean retail price. Retail price is the price in the book that people are not supposed to sell that product for any more than. No one ever sells it at that price though when talking about guitars unless they are the most expensive store on the planet and don't plan to stay in business.
