Guitar Recommendation?

I'm thinking my next axe should have the following features: two splittable humbuckers, trem equipped (preferably a Floyd). A Les Paul style 3-way switch. Tone push-pull for tapping the pups.

I've been checking out the JS's but I'd prefer a figured maple top and transparent finish. I'm considering a MMEB Axis, various Carvin models, and various ESP models.

Any recommendations?

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

I'd say DC400. I pulled a red one out of the 'Bay yesterday for 525 shipped. I'll let you know how she plays when she arrives.

Didn't you have a beautiful Carvin maple boarded 7 string for sale about 2 or 3 years ago? I wanted that guitar bad at the time, but didn't have the cash for it.

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

Yeah, that was a birdseye maple boarded DC747 which I sold. I got a hold of a Schecter USA 7 and was blown away and decided to sell my two Carvins (DC727 and DC747) to finance the purchase of two other 7 string Schecter USAs.

Let me know how you like the DC400. For $525, you can’t go wrong. Only problem is waiting on **** to find the one with the woods, features, and finish you want.

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

I read your descripton and thought of my Carvin DC127 with the maple top option, except it has coil split switches instead of a push pull. Highly recommended!

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

Get a Jackson SL2H Soloist. I preferably like the SL1 Soloist, but the only difference is that the SL1 has an HSS setup with a Classic Stack in the bridge and the SL2H has an HH setup with the '59 in the bridge, and the switching is 3-way for the SLH2 and 5-way for the SL1.

SL2H:

BODY Alder with Flame Maple Top on Transparent Colors
NECK Neck-Thru-Body Quartersawn Maple
NECK DIMENSIONS 3rd Fret: .790”, 12th Fret: .850”
TUNING MACHINES Die-Cast Tuners
FINGERBOARD Ebony
NO. OF FRETS 24 Jumbo Frets
BRIDGE PICKUP Seymour Duncan® JB™ TB4 Humbucking Pickup
MIDDLE PICKUP N/A
NECK PICKUP Seymour Duncan® 59™ SH1N Humbucking Pickup
CONTROLS Master Volume, Master Tone
BRIDGE Floyd Rose® Original™ Double Locking 2-Point Tremolo
PICKUP SWITCHING 3-Position Toggle

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

a good choice to consider would be the Peavey HP Special. its got a floyd rose, coil tapping is standard, and a wolfgang neck profile. so, if a wolfie neck fits your hand, then this may be the cream of the crop. not to mention a pretty sweet and unique looking guitar.

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

Sounds very much like Carvin DC400 or ESP Horizon. Can't go wrong with them.

The 6 string pickups are better than good, and some of them are outstanding. The 7 string pickups are really just placeholders, until you put something else in there. I'd very likely not swap the pickups on a Carvin 6. I'd definitely swap the pickups on a Carvin 7.

Thanks for the info . I needed an opinion of the Carvin 6 string pickups in general.

The ones on my DC127 which I THINK (am not really sure) are the C22N / C22B, the louder ones. They do cleans almost as good as my Les Paul which for the record is about the best clean sounding guitar I have ever heard. They gain up nicely too. Sort of like a the Gibson 498T/490Rs but their cleans are better (or maybe it's because the wood). They do everything quite nicely, but I like the classic fusion tone on a cleaner fatter amp like a Classic 50 the best

In comparison with the Jem, they sound like quieter with a more classic voicing than the Evos with more highs and lows and less mids (but not lacking mids, which is important!).

Re: Guitar Recommendation?

My 2 Cents. I see that you are eyeing an EBMM Axis. I have an Axis and it so rocks. Even amongst my many IBZ's it is still my main axe. It is easily the best instrument i have played. And forget the EVH thing, the guitar sounds super cool in any hard rock or metal use. I use it for averything from classic vintage tones to godsmack and disturbed and it never fails. And the fact that is doesn't have that pesky tone knob helps. Oh come on like you ever use it live. I do not like the peavey version though. I found it weak comparatively. I believe now it is the HP signature and i am not at all a fan. And my opinion on carvins are that they also are lacking in the tone dept. Mostly due to the pups. I believe if you change out the pups you would probably be ok. The guitars look good and offer options galore but the few i have played on rather a bit disgusted me. And active electronics for me as a live player are just in the way. Now the Ibanez s series is also a great choice. Very toneful and easy to play. Rg's are equally good and besides my Axis my rg's are my babies. So realize that there are many options so choose well and remember to play them all first and don't stop pulling down guitars and test playing them until you find the one that you cannot put down.
