HELP!

Hi All....Ive havent asked your advice in a while, so here goes

PIITB is not an option.

About 3 weeks ago a guy i know rang me up and asked if i wanted to buy a mint Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty guitar (2 pickup, gold hardware, 1985 model)

He was asking $2900 Australian. I asked him that i inspect the guitar immediately and make up my mind then ( i was quite keen) the 2006 model is selling for $7199 here in Australia at the moment

I left it to him to call me to arrange a time for me to inspect the guitar, at this point i was really keen.

However 3-4 weeks went by and i didnt hear a thing, in this time i had called him twice and sent him a few txt messages.

after not hearing anything for this time i decided to discount the idea and started planning for a computer and my budget was roughly this price ~$3k.

So, i became keen on buying this computer, to the point that i have ordered it (havent paid yet tho)

anyways tonight the guy with the guitar calls me tonight and appologises and asks if im keen to have a look at the guitar tomorrow night.

i said id have a look at it for sure, but in my head i have a dilemma.

I was only wanting to spend ~$3k. what do i buy? the guitar or computer? my current computer is on its way down (amd athlon 3200+) and i could really do with the rig, but the gibson guitar is a good deal in my opinion and would either hold its value or even increase in value.

Now...

i can afford both without loaning or borrowing money, cold hard cash baby, but i wasnt counting on spending 6 grand.

Im quite confused...help!

Re: HELP!

The computer will lose its value exponentially, and the les paul will retain or even grow in value 50 years from now . The guitar is the wisest investment, but not having a good computer rig sucks. I suggest if you dont play online games that you could build your own uber pc for under 1000 dollars anyways.

Re: HELP!

For $1500, you could build your own computer and get an epiphone. That would leave you with $4500 which I would invest into hookers and booze.

Re: HELP!

Ive learned not to try and have my computer up to date all the time, but, i know the feeling...

Id say buy the Gibson, and buy the computer too if you absolutely need it... think of it this way, if next month you desperately need a new computer, you can get it, and chances are, its gonna be better for what you get today for the same money...

Now, if you ever fancy teh idea of getting a mint Paul again, you aint gonna find one at 2900 aus, are you?

And if all takes a turn for the sh*tter, you can always sell the Paul down the road... Or if you dont like the guitar after all, you can sell her next month to fund a computer, and even make a lil profit in the meantime... just make sure the headstock is not broken/glued, and youd be good to go

Re: HELP!

Go with the Les Paul..... You can build a nice computer later and for cheaper by getting the components from some place like Newegg.com and assembling it yourself.

Re: HELP!

IMO, go with the guitar, because worse case scenario if you are strapped for cash, it will hold its value better than some electronic parts. If you're handy with computers, then why not put some money towards a new processor (is the 3200 really that bad? am I that far behind on the times? ), a new motherboard if you need it for compatability with the processor and some more ram (ram comes cheap, just make sure you got the right kind!)

Installation of RAM is a breeze, the processor and motherboard I'd be more careful about - they have to play nice together

Re: HELP!

I say computer, the 80's Gibsons were some of the worst ones to come out of the factory, thats when Gibson was saved from bankruptcy and almost becoming non existent, thanks to a couple guys Gibson is still here today. But they almost werent that lucky.

Most 80's Gibsons are severely hit and miss, and hence the reason they almost folded. And most 80's Gibsons are not the most collectable.

So I say pass on the Gibson..

my 2 cents

Re: HELP!

What do you do with the computer? If you are an average user, the Athlon 3200+ is more than sufficient. If you are a heavy gamer, you would be better of spending approx $150-$300 to upgrade the video card.

Re: HELP!

If you don't want to spend 6k then buy the Les Paul, you can always get the computer later.
