Re: Help from Stratocaster players

Thank you all. I really want to keep the Fender characteristics before crunch, 'cause I gotta 'Joe' for that.

I did have the pickups & the cavity shielded (along with a fret level) and it helped, but its still in & out depending upon where I am standing & sometimes, you really want to crank it but the grit clogs it up.

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

I love the Carvin AP-11s. I have them in my Mexi strat and they give a nice single coil tone, but with more mids than the stock fenders. They sound great overdriven, and you can get them pre-installed on a Carvin pearl pickguard for about $125 or so. You can definitely still do SRV with them. The only drawback is that they only come in black, if that's important to you. Master volume, master tone, and on/off for the bridge so you can run neck and bridge at once. I have EMG SAs in my Soloist, and while they're nice I like the Carvins better.

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

I have the Fender Hot Noiseless pickups (Jeff Beck's), and they are AMAZING. All the shimmer and sparkle you could ever imagine, plus more. The ceramic magnets really do throw a little spice in the mixture. The bridge pickup has quite a bit of bite, which is really good for blues. However, the one thing I can NEVER get enough of on this guitar is that neck pickup... it sings, cries, yells, purrs... it does EVERYTHING perfectly. It can be buttery and creamy, or really single-coil like... and the set's got that elusive quack I'm always in love with.

Oh yeah, did I mention no 60 cycle hum? Well, it's there TECHNICALLY, but it's been reduced by something like 98% or so I'm told.

If you want more info on these just PM me, I'll be more than happy to help.

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

i personally would stay away from the fender vintage noiseless. i have them in my deluxe players strat from factory. they are alright, but not near as nice as my robin's rio grande vintage tallboys. granted the hum is on the rio grande's. now, i do have a dimarzio virtual vintage blues in another one of my strats, and it is way nice. all my strats have a hot rail in the bridge that i can coil tap. being ceramic, the tone for the bridge single isn't "true", but IMO, spices up a lackluster strat single coil tone anyway. strat neck singles are where its at for strats to me. i think for what your looking for the dimarzio area 61 with a tone zone s in the bridge would do anything you need it to do. if you needed to thin out the tone zone, you could coil tap it or wire it for parallel.

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

what about Bill Lawrence? I've actually been looking for the same type of pickups that he wants (less noise but still a good fender sound, SRV'ish is the side I like) for my Fender american deluxe.
But yeah, what about Bill Lawrence?

Also, If you shielded your guitar like Satch does wouldn't that get rid of hum a little?

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

Lots of folk mention the SRV tone. Remember that he just used stock fender pickups - the tone came from huge strings and playing hard (insert all the "tone is in the hands" comments you want, we're talking gear issues here)

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

If you want vintage style Fender tone with zero RF noise, check out Chris Kinman's pickups - a friend of mine installed a set of, I think Woodstocks in a semi mongrel strat made out of Fender Custom Shop bits and they really seriously sound fantastic - classic Strat tone, but more output, more dynamic range and absolutely zero unwanted noise. Callahams recommend them, can't get much higher praise than that!

Cheers,

David

actually I use to use 13 gauge strings but my fender neck started to warp from it

Re: Help from Stratocaster players

Oh, yeah, how could I forget - I put a set of Joe Barden Strat pickups in the guitar I affectionately refer to as the Uber-Strat (solid Rosewood D neck, Alder body, Wilkinson Trem etc etc), and while I don't really think they do "vintage" strat tone, they are absolutely killer pickups - someone once described them as sounding a bit like being hit on the head with a velvet wrapped brick - and that is actually quite appropriate!

Cheers,

David
