Heritage Guitars For Sale

Heritage Guitar's owners decide to sell company

The men who started their own guitar company after Gibson Guitar Corp. left Kalamazoo in 1984 have temporarily halted operations and are in negotiations to sell Heritage Guitar Inc., one of the owners said Friday morning.

The door to the shop has been closed and locked for weeks at Heritage Guitar, which had operated out of the former Gibson factory on Parsons Street in Kalamazoo since 1985.

"We're selling it," said Marvin Lamb, one of four co-owners. Lamb started with Gibson in 1956 and was the factory's superintendent from 1974 until Gibson left for Nashville, Tenn.

"It looks like it's going to remain in Kalamazoo," Lamb said by telephone Friday. "We should know in a few days."

The deal is not complete, Lamb said. He declined to comment further.

The Gazette was unable to reach Heritage's other co-owners, J.P. Moats, Bill Paige or Jim Deurloo.

My initial reaction is "what a shame." Heritage made nice instruments with all that history behind them. I hope a buyer step sup to carry on the tradition.

Oh man...I was about to get a Heritage. I better get one while they last.

What's their equivalent to a Studio?

I'm converting to Les Paul-ism these days.

I've never seen a stripped down Heritage that would be a studio

Re: Heritage Guitars For Sale

The thing is the original guys just kept making the guitars, and they never retired. These guys all had lots of years at Gibson to begin with; I think they all need a vacation. They aren't close to being able to fill their orders, and didn't want to give up hand shaping all the necks and the other little things that make these guitars so great. My 555 is at least as nice as a 355 is, and it was less than half the price as well. Heritage makes a beautiful instrument, and anyone considering getting one should know they really are good guitars. You can often find the Les Pauls at the same price as an Edwards, and trust me, there's no comparison.
