Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

The lowest I've ever tuned a 6 string personally is Drop Bb with 12 guage strings. The guitar sounded like crap tuned that low, though. I also don't really like to tune 7 strings out of standard tuning but I dude try out one that was tuned a step down and had the top string dropped so I believe it was tuned GDGCFAD.

I tuned my RG321MH in this for not so long ago, with .009-.042 !

e = C#
B = G#
G = E
D = B
A = F#
E = B

How did you pull that off? Could you heard the strings over the buzzing? Or did you raise the action a mile high? I can barely stand how floppy 9's are in standard tuning!

Machine head tuning on my fender for imperium, i think something like:
e = C#
B = G#
G = E
D = B
A = F#
E = B
Horrible tuning, hated it!

Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

Haha, great thread!

I always use standard tuning on all my guitars, very very occasionally Drop D on my Strat.

Having an Edge Pro on the RG rules out alternative tunings anyway unless you are prepared to spend hours faffing about with the bridge.

If I was into downtuning and low chords I would just buy a 7-string - that way you can still do lead ok as well as doing low chords.

Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

When my band are active I tune my RG321BKF down to B (BEADF#B), originally I used a 'Not Even Slinky' Ernie Ball set (12-56) but the D string (G in std tuning) was a non-wound one which had an awful sound to it. Last time I got a 10-46 set and a 56 gauge and just discarded the 10 gauge string, which was a bit better. Don't really love how it plays with that gauge of string, even if I can work out how to get the right tension, the plain thickness of the strings is hard to play fast with.

Will consider getting an RG7321 if I can pull together the moneys.

Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

Wow.....old thread.

I have 2 guitars in this tuning- AEADGBE
1 guitar this tuning- BEADGBE
and 1 guitar this tuning- BEADF#BE

occassionally, I will experiment with this tuning- GDADGBE by dropping the low E and the low A down a whole step. That's the lowest i'll go. I use 9s on all my guitars except one where I use 10s.

Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

yea, thats not old, this is old...
normally play ADGCFAD, i have gone down to an octave below a norm 6 sting: EADGB?EA its sounds really cool starting with a 90 to like a 15 i think. but thats on a 25.5... it would sound alot better on a longer scale, atleast a 30. i had to drill some holes in my machine tuners... cause the strings wouldn't fit... still looks/sounds the same as b4 the operation though

Re: How Low Can You Go? - Downtuners?

I tune down to one whole octave

to

E
A
D
G
B
E

but I use it for a fake bass with my Variax

But I have the variax set up like this on one bank, each bank uses the 5 way switch if you never used a variax.

I also learned a neat trick which is to stack two humbuckers right on top each other in workshop which gives this HUGE TONE.. Anyways

Position 1: E A D G B E Standard (Bridge)
Position 2: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb Down 1/2 Step (Bridge)
Position 3: D A D G B E Drop D (Bridge)
Position 4: B E A D F# B Seven String on a 6 (Bridge)
Position 5: E A D G B E Standard (Neck)

Anyways heres the video its 8.5megs or so..
