kahler or floyd

floyds r fulcrum style. kahlers r ball bearing. I basically want you guys to compare for me the OFR/Edge and the Kahler Pro series 22xx/23xx cuz i kno ive played an old fender HM strat with a spyder and it was godawfully stiff.

Re: kahler or floyd

Well, we installed a fair few Kahler trems back when they first came out....... then tore them out and re-installed Floyd Rose trems when the owners realised that they were pretty ordinary.

Unless they have considerably upgraded the original design, you are far better with a Floyd - there is absolutely no reason by the way, as to why an Edge/Floyd should feel any stiffer than a standard Strat style trem, it's just balancing spring tension with string tension!

Re: kahler or floyd

I disagree. I think it comes down to the individual. Some like them, some don't. I had Kahlers on my Charvel model 4s and 6s, and loved them so much, I had one put on my Strat, and never regretted it. Looked like Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet, from Racer X, did just fine with them, too.
Nep, if you can, try them for yourself, and see if YOU like them.

Yep, it all comes down to personal preference, but we had some original Kahlers which had fairly horrendous tuning issues - the routing and nut clamp are pretty ugly too IMHO - again, just my 2 bobs worth!

Re: kahler or floyd

That's interesting. I never had any issues with mine. I know some consider them to be higher maintenance than the Floyds, but I never really had to do much to them, aside form ensuring the bridge rollers, were free, and not sticking. I know the Kahler Flyers wre awful, but, fortunately, I never had any of those (don't think I'd ever buy a guitar with one of those on it). Consider myself lucky, I guess.

I have a Kalher 2230 on my Charvel, and have the new 7300 coming for my old Rs440. I have been waiting for the day Kahler came back.

Cool

Re: kahler or floyd

Kahlers are quite good as well as the OFR and Ibanez Edge/Lo pro, the only advantage with kahlers is that you get better sustain because it's top mounted and you do not route a trem cavity, in my opinion and playing experience you can't go wrong with any of them!!!

Re: kahler or floyd

The Kahler top loading trems (the 2200 and 2300 series) were cool when they came out and a lot of people tried them. I had one myself. I had it put on the first Charvel I ever owned back in '86. It even had 2 bars, a short one and a long one but the dang thing wouldn't stay in tune as well as a Floyd because I didn't have the time or patience to constantly maintain it.

On the other hand, I really liked their fixed bridge. I especially liked that it came in red which really cool on the Jackson I had it one. Ah, those were the days. Red bridge, green tuning machines custom made US Jackson guitars that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Re: kahler or floyd

I had a 2200 I believe on my Charvel #6 and I liked it. I always wanted to upgrade to the bigger bar and never did before I traded it on a Charvel #4. You definitely need to play both because they have completely different feeling. I always thought the kahler needed a little more resistance. Still a quality unit.

Re: kahler or floyd

I love non-recessed original Floyds and Kahler Pros, but the Kahler Pro must have the Floyd nut, much more stable that way. Jack.

Re: kahler or floyd

One tip for you - install the Kahler bass trem springs. They are much heavier duty and really feel a lot better - more "substantial" (for lack of a better term). Also, you can do double stop bends and stuff a lot better with them as well.
