Late '80s Carvin designs

S'up?! I have horrendous GAS for a guitar like the one Jason Becker is wearing in much of the footage available of him playing.

It's the blue Carvin with a maple fretboard, H-H p/up config and floating trem. Did this design actually get manufactured or did they just make a one off for Jason? I've looked on various websites and i can find blue twin cut guitars with maple fretboards but with only one humbucker... Also the 1988 DC200 looks pretty close but doesn't have the maple fretboard...

Does anyone know anything more about the availability of the blue one with maple fretboard that Jason has?

Ta very much me ducks,

x

Carvin has lots more options than most other manufacturers. You can get rosewood, ebony, or maple/birdseye maple fretboards on most of not all of the DC series guitars. They'll still do a pointy headstock as well, but not the blatant Jackson ripoff pointy that they got sued over. You should be able to order something very similar today. They should do a Becker Tribute, but that's another story.

Yeah, I emailed them about making me an exact copy of Becker's guitar. They told me that wasn't possible They said the DC model was as close as i would get. They really need to bring back that jackson knockoff headstock cause i really liked it.

Carvin makes seriously good guitars. I fell in love with my DC135.
In my dealings with Carvin over the years, customer service has been pretty much nonexsistant. They do just enough for you to shut ya up really. Sad.

Still some of the best playing guitars you can buy stock.

Re: Late '80s Carvin designs

Hey there,

This is actually my first post! Carvin actually did do an unadvertised Jason Becker DC200 a few years back...they only put it up on their message board.

They no longer do the "ST" (Jackson-ish) body style, but you can get the "rounded" edges on a DC body (which aren't really my thing, I like the beveled Carvin DC edges better). As for the headstock, they are offering the second incarnation of their "pointy" headstock, which ran in '91, and can see here: http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/91-guitars.html.

You can get a flame-maple blue DC127 (optioned up to DC200 specs/active electronics, flame maple top, matching flamed headstock) with a maple fretboard (or even birdseye maple) with the pointy headstock for around $1300.

Definitely call them and talk to someone before ordering though. The website sucks.

I have 2 Carvins, an AC175 and a DC131 (unadvertised H-S model, basically a DC135 with no middle pickup) and love them both. My only gripe is that they're not 25.5'' scale...but they play, feel and sound amazing. The DC131 I have has the reverse pointy headstock, with a birdseye maple board and LNG-ish transparent finish over flame. The AC175 is all mahogany, with a classic sunburst finish. I'm out of town on business then next few days or I'd post some pics.

Cheers,
Danny

Danny, welcome to Jemsite.

What is the scale length of your Carvin's? 24.75?

You can get any feature they offered before, even if it's not in the current catalog. You just have to ask. But it will cost extra.

I think Carvin uses 25" scale length.

Yep - it's 25". It takes some getting used to (or at least did for me) if you're used to 25.5".

Carvin's are amazing. I have basically the exact remake of Jason's Carvin. Just doesn't have the Kahler. Quick mod, and I could have the same thing. Plus mine has stainless steel jumbo frets, and locking tuners. I love the 25" scale, it is a better neck then most other guitars.
