Locking Tuners without a locking nut?

Hi Everyone,

So here's the deal : I've got an Ibanez RG1527. It has the Ibanez Edge Pro Tremolo, and the locking Nut. Lately I've been really getting annoyed with locking and unlocking the nut every time a string goes out of tune too much.

Therefore, I was wondering for any of you with Tremolo's and Locking Tuners WITHOUT a locking nut, how is your tuning after Heavy Trem use? (Dive Bombs, and Vai like abuse?)

Locking tuners don't do what people tend to assume they do - they lock the string into the binding post so you only need 1/2 a wrap around the post. They don't lock themselves in place once the string is at pitch, so if there's any movement in the gears the tuning will still shift, and you've still got to worry about the string moving in the nut.

If you're having to keep unlocking the nut to retune, I'd suggest you're not stretching the strings in properly before you lock everything down.

And also making adjustments with the fine tuners. However if the strings are going so far out of tune that a fine tuner can't compromise for, then you basically need a proper set-up and new set of locking studs added.

i abuse the trem on my rg and never have to retune again exept minor adjustments made with fine tuners. I suggest you look on ibanezrules tech page to do a nice set up and youŽll never unlock that nut except when restringing.

Carvins with Floyds don't come with locking nuts by default; you have to order them. Unless you dive bomb hard all the time, you should be fine with the locking Sperzels and the fine tuners on the trem. If you are going to abuse the trem as it were, you'll need the locking nut.
