I say get your self about $250 to $300 up then go search all the pawn shops in town if you find a nice Ibanez that you like make a low ball offer like if they want $399 for it tell them you'll give them $250 cash then they mite take it or say $300 if they do tell them "out the door" that means they have to back the tax out of it so you get it cheaper most pawn shop will deal with you its always offer, counter offer, offer. Just make sure it works, the neck is straight and its not too beat up. You should be able to find a nice RG570 or 550 for less then $300. Then take your new find to a local guitar store have it set up and rock on! Or go to ebay and get your self a nice used RG570 ( the reason I keep saying 570 is because they are good all around guitars its nicely made and sounds great it is the heart of the rg line and thing less you mite be disappointed later on ) *

If your a beginner you might consider one of those new Kramers from Music-Yo.com. The features on those models are great for the price, but you might have to take it to someone to set it up. They don't come set up very good from the factory from what I hear. Less than $300 for a neck-thru with a descent quality Floyd unit is unheard of.

I personally would go with a USA Jackson, Ibanez, or ESP, but if I had to choose one it would be the USA Jackson. First off, the Jackson is cheaper because there is no "star endorser " to pay off. That alone drives the price up $200 on the other models. The USA Jackson is also a neck-thru which sounds much better than a bolt on. They also retain their value pretty good also. By keeping it in the US you get faster and better service(most of the time). I do however like ESPs and Ibanezes too and they make some pretty good models. *The Lynch Kamikaze and the JPM are my favorites from these two. Whatever you decide on, make sure its got a quality Floyd unit (if you want a Floyd) and good pick-ups.........peace from unclebuck.............

Get as much money as you can afford, look through some catalogues, PLAY some guitars to get a general feel of what you like, and then once you have an idea and have researched all the options and have an idea of what you'd like, then go out to the shops again, armed with cash, and play every single guitar in sight that you like.

And if you like the soound coming out of it, and like how the neck feels, then buy it. Look at second hand guitars as well.

What kind of music are you thinking of playing? Heavy rock? Metal? Blues? Jazz? That alone will be a big influence on your decision.

As for tips on buying: Take someone you know who's been playing a couple of years if you can (and who's good). They'll be able to quickly see past any bulls**t that sales people will throw at you.

Play a bunch of guitars in your price range, and pick the one that you like the most. We can't tell you what your ears and hands like.
If it's Ibanez you're after, try to get an RG 5XX or higher rather than a Korean made 3XX or 4XX. You'll get better wood, better building, and an Edge trem.
You can easily find a used one on ebay for $300. Or for that matter, there's a probly a Jemsiter that's looking to sell one.

I second what Doink had to say.
My RG-550 was like a natural extension of my body.

Make sure it's COMFORTABLE too. *If it doesn't feel good, you won't pick it up to play it. *
Oh, and sorry, but they don't make a guitar that feels like Ali Landry..............yet. :-)

NOTE: *The RG-421 is Japanese made, and should hit stores with a decent price. *Definitely try one out.
