MusicMan/EB JP signature series vs. Jem7vwh

Buying axe for my kid..he loved both guitars but is leaning towards the MusicMan -- is the Floyd Rose a pain in the butt to get used to? Which guitar has less sensitive pickups which allows for less than perfect playing? Need your help gentlemen...thanx

The EBMM will have less sensative pickups and the trem is very nice. It will be tricky to figure out but if he reads up on it and studies it a bit he should be totally fine! Great guitars, both of them, but it sounds like he would like the EBMM more.

Re: MusicMan/EB JP signature series vs. Jem7vwh

I own both and they're excellent guitars.

The neck profiles are quite different, the EBMM has a more rounded neck that's probably a bit easier for people who have smaller hands.

As far as the pickups go, they're both high output, and are very clear, they'll show up mistakes regardless - that's a good thing though!

The bridge on the EBMM is great, but it's still a fully floating bridge, so has all the stability issues that a floyd would have. It is a little easier to tune though due to the lack of a locking nut, and it's still very stable thanks to the locking tuners.

The best thing would be to let your kid decide which is the most comfortable. If i could only bring one with me somewhere, i'd usually pick up the Jem because of the pickup options, you can get full on metal tones from it, aswell as some pretty good strat like tones.

Tough choice, but you cant go wrong with either

Can I ask you all connoseours of the EBMM JP model to post some closeup pics of the trem unit? What's so special about it? I saw a luke model the other day and the trem looked similar to the JP model.

Can anyone shed some light?

Here's some nice big pics

I took them a few weeks back to help someone out with their setup on the JP Forum.

There's nothing really special about it, it's just got a nice feel and flutters well. The bar over the top of the saddles is a nice touch though.

I wish the JP trem were available on other guitars. It is just one of the best trems to come out in a long, long time. I think it's the best feature on that guitar. Smooth, comfortable and of course, easy to tune and restring. I have lots of Ibanez with Floyds and after all of these years, I still hate restringing them. Not sure how old your kid is, but you might consider a hardtail guitar if he's younger and doesn't want the hassles that can drive some folks nuts with floating bridges. If he's old enough to work on guitars ok, he can learn how to maintain it well enough.

my son just turned 14 last wk -- he's been playing almost 2 years; he started on a starter Squier from Indo then moved onto a Gibson Les Paul Studio exactly a year ago. His idols are Satch, Petrucci, Gilbert and EVH and also loves to play to Norman Brown, Lee Rit and Tommy Emmanuel...

I think he's old enough to start learning the mechanics of guitars--his hands are not that small so the bigger neck on the JP isn't an issue -- he's played on (2) different Jems from two different stores -- he didn't like the second as much; felt that the set up was a bit off and not as "buttery" as the first one.

However, when he played the JP -- he LOVED everything about it. I'm trying to get him to verbalize more specifically as to why he prefered one vs. the other -- I'm frankly kinda surprised since he's only been playing for a short period of time that he'd notice little nuances on each guitar. Thanks for all the great feedback!!! Will keep you posted on what ultimately he ends up buying...

Re: MusicMan/EB JP signature series vs. Jem7vwh

Tell him to get on these forums so he can read up himself! I started these forums when I was only 14, and I've learned a lot. I now do all the setups on all of my guitars as well. It's a great learning tool.

With that said, I would go with the EBMM without a doubt. I would never recommend a Floyd-equipped guitar for a first guitar. Plus, I just think the EBMMs are better built instruments.

Personally, I would take the EB/MM JP over any Jem or any guitar of that type all day.

I think that the EBMM JP will be a great guitar for him.

It's so ironic how relatively little love for the JEM is shown, even on its own site.

Way, Play a EB/MM and you will know what we are talking about. That is coming from a Jem owner and lover.

No, I've played one before many times and it's great (much better than a JEM...I'd actually like to have an EBMM JP)). I'm not defending the JEM, I'm just saying that it is funny that even people on JEMsite are starting to realize how overpriced/hyped the JEM is.
