It's about time !!! 20-30 years in the making!
That guy has been getting away with that for a long time.. not just with gibsons either.
Those of us that are in the area might remember seeing the adds that said "99 SG/$150 Stratocasters/ $5 guitar stands".. about a small paragraph of things like that Those add's were all over all the local & NYC classifieds throughout the late 70's & 80's right up to the early 90's which is when I went there to check out the SG. (The SG was real.. one of the funky early 70's ones with the black plastic covered "Gibson" logo pickups but it was snapped in 3 or 4 pieces & if I remember correctly He would only sell it for $99 if you agreed to pay about $300 for the repair which at the time it was a $200 guitar in good shape) I had gone back a few times for stands & lighting equipment.. all cheapo import stuff but it workeed & was priced right.
The family used to have a
music store in the area until the late 60's or early 70's which when it closed (rumor at the time was they were sued for selling fake Fenders) they operated out of their house for a decade or two which looked like the Sanford & Son of musical instruments x 100 .... junk piled from floor to ceiling throughout the entire house. At that time they did have plenty of legit instruments but always had on hand 15-20 cheapo imported Strat copies which carried a fake Fender decal included with the guitar.. (not aplied on the guitar though) At the time He claimed to have thousands of gibson/fender decals.
One very cool thing he had that was real was several large boxes of original Fender literature left over from when they had a legit store.
The "no fake guitars were sold" is complete BS !!! I
