Hey guys. All of my electric guitars feature 1 5/8" nuts but I'm really interested in scoring a EBMM Petrucci which features a 1 11/16" nut. How big a difference is this when playing, how much will I notice the difference, and how quickly can you acclimate back and forth between guitars with the two different nut widths?
It doesn't have a major affect on me, but you should play a guitar with that nut size first to see if it'll affect your playing, but I doubt it will. Good luck, JP EBMM's are the shiznit, although not my fave in the looks department.
The difference is slight, but it depends - on your fingers, on the string spacing, etc. Acclimation is no big deal, as long as you're comfortable on that size.
It's a 1mm difference so it's only slight. I have no problem going between the two but all but one of my guitars are 1 11/16" and I prefer that. The primary difference I notice is fingering open chords (first fret) because the 1 5/8 is a little narrow for my fingers. If 1 5/8 is comfortable for you, you should have no problem with the 1 11/16.
Go to your local guitar store and your typical Fender Strat is 1 11/16 so you can see how it feels to you.
