Vinnie kept hitting them with his hand. The guitar would go out of tune while he was playing. The floyd's tuners sit closer to the picking hand than the edge's tuners. I had the same problem with my Charvel.

The original Floyd Rose trems didn't have fine tuners. That was an idea that came later. (I think Brad Gillis of Night Ranger had one of the original Floyd units on his guitar.) Some players prefer the simplicity and ergonomics of not having the fine tuners on the bridge.

Did Vinnie Moore's signature model have a locking nut or a standard nut with locking tuners?

I actually saw vinnie recently (in concert) and for the life of me cannot figure what guit he was using as I was way back in the crowd (sorry to be off-topic) but does anyone know his main player these days?

(it looked like some kinda' bastardized strat)

As ever, he was amazingly flawless.

Vinnie uses MusicMans nowadays. Check out www.vinniemoore.com for gear info. The thing you mentioned was probably one of his Silhouette Specials.

Vinnie used/uses a regular nut with Sperzel (sp?) locking tuners.

Darren,
Yessir, Brad Gillis to this day has that same original style fine-tunerless Floyd Rose on that old red Strat of his, and it would seem, still swears by it.
He also had that neck's fretboard extended to add the 22nd fret.
