Opinions on Schecters

So, I've been looking at Schecter for the last coupla years, but always end up buying an Ibanez every time. I've been playin' them for 20 years and Ibanez just rule, but the Hellraisers look, sound and play pretty bad ass for the most part. I say the "most part" because I've played 4 or 5 different ones and all were great except for one, and it was pretty damn bad (set-up was s!@#, finish sucked, fretboard dry as hell, but only this one). Plus their made in South Korea. But for the money I think their a pretty good deal. Haven't had a chence to try out the new Loomis yet either. Just looking for opinions. I live a good 100 miles from a decent guitar store and don't get the opportunity to check new stuff out alot. How is their consistency, customer service, etc. All your opinions and info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

I have a friend that owns a music store who is a Schecter dealer. I love them. My favorite is the Tempest Blackjack.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

I've played a bunch of them, and don't really find them too appealing. They look fantastic for sure, but their necks don't have a lot of character. The finish on my Strat neck is to die for, same with my Ibanez. All the Schecter necks I've played were painted, and normally I wouldn't care, but they bothered me a bit. Painted necks by other companies don't seem to bug me as much. Plus I don't like cheap guitars with neck binding - just doesn't do it for me. But to be fair, they have decent pickups, and are made well for the most part. Check out the review in Guitar Player of the Schecter Lady Luck.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

I think they are one of the best values for the money. I like them and eventually when I want to get my mahogany set neck sound, it will probably be one of them. I don't hear too many people knock them with good cause. The bad stuff is usually due to stupidity and fanatic brad loyalty. Oh yeah, and people who think that a Gibson Les Paul is the be all and end all of guitars.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

Yeah, I hear 'ya on the neck, but it was still cool. Not at all what I'm used to. They are just such a good deal, I mean for all you get. EMG's in a guitar with that price tag? It's pretty bad ass. Can't wait for NAMM; GAS in full effect!!!! Just recieved an email today on the new Hellraiser and they changed the headstock! It's not bad, but one of the things I love about the Schecter/Hellraiser guitar is that headstock design. Just think it's the best looking new headstock design in a while. And it has new EMG's with a coil tap, so it looks interesting.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

This is a sample of the Schector Exotic.

This clip is as follows.
Clean all 3 pup selections
Same but with coil tap.
Dirty all 3 pup selections
Same but with coil tap.
Lead all 3 pup selections
Then bridge with tap....NOISY.

This guitar is pretty HIGH output, almost to the muddy stage. I prefere to use the tapped setting, especially with the JSX wich is a thick amp already. I think this guitar would be best suited for low chunka crunchy stuff. The neck has no radius, which I don't personally prefer. I'm more of a Strat, JS heavy radius kinda guy myself. Not tapped, would be great clean for jazz tone, thick and juicy. Tapped, it's not really Strat single coil sounding, but it cleans up alot better and thins out enough for more of a tight, not so beefy crunch.

I wouldn't really equate this guitar to anything else. It's not like a LP or an RG. It fills it's own niche.

This is a 3.5meg mp3. Listen for yourself. Recorded on JSX through POD on its way to Cubase direct.

Hope this helps at least a little.

Later, Darin

Re: Opinions on Schecters

I wouldn't say they're the best guitars in the world, but they're not that bad.

you get your moneys worth.

although, I still think the best value in the guitar world is that you can get RG570's for $350 on the Bay.

Re: Opinions on Schecters

in the 10 minutes I played one I really didn't like the neck and
the weight of the guitar so I put it down for an Ibanez RG.
Felt heavy, because I'm use to my RG's. Now I know why I
never got into LP's

Re: Opinions on Schecters

Schecter guitars are a GREAT value for the money. I personally tried the Exotic Star and didnt like it. The classic and C1 Elite however are fantastic.
