PRS question

I know there are few guys on here with PRS guitars, I am considering buying a custom 22, how sticky does the neck get, is it nitrocellulose ?

Re: PRS question

Hm I have this Standard 24 (see thread with pics below) and for me the neck never gets sticky. I was actually suprised, and I could do all the same things on a PRS then I could on my ibanez with unfinished neck.

I would recommend going for a Custom 24, 24 frets is so much cooler

As for the finishes im pretty sure they are nitrocellulose

Re: PRS question

Not sticky- I have Custom 22 and it rox. Nothing comes close- my main axe. Take it and rock, you can sweat the neck and it's still fast.

Re: PRS question

I had a PRS Custom 22 with the trem and birds. I sold it to buy a new EBMM Petrucci when they came out. I couldn't resist.

Loved the Wide Fat neck. I was used to the Ibanez Wizard II in my old RG470 and this was a step up in thickness but it was very comfortable.

Only thing I didn't like was that palm muting wasn't as comfortable on it due to the trem which has raised edges on both the low E and high E strings. I tried everything, even raising the bridge saddles, bit it just didn't feel comfortable and natural to me while playing.

Also found the PRS sound to be very clear with good note seperation. The sustain is very good on these guitars too. I a/b it with my friend's Les Paul Custom w. Zakk Wylde EMGs and it actually sounded a lot darker than the LP custom. Thats probably due to the EMGs though.

Re: PRS question

If you are heel bent on a PRS, get one with a solid unfinished rosewood neck. Plan on changing the bridge for one of the better ones that Ed Roman sells. You can't even adjust the intonation on the factory bridge.

I used to own this one:

PRS McCarty Brazilian limited, Matteo blue 10 top, solid indian rosewood neck. Sold it to buy my second Zachary guitar. I suggest to anyone to read the Zacharyguitars.com site before buying a PRS. Also, do not get conned into buying one of Ed Roman's PRS copies instead.

A PRS will hold it's resale value really well as long as you don't scratch it. One little blem and you can forget it. Takes about $800 of of the value instantly. I could never get comfortable with the idea and hardly played mine. Sold it for $3500 to a guy in China! You can probly buy copies of it on fleabay now! Ha!

Much better!

Now let's hear about that GAS!

As for the finishes im pretty sure they are nitrocellulose
The finishes are a bit of a mixture - the bodies, and Mahogany necks are some kind of Polyurethane, or water borne finish (KTS lacquer perhaps?), any Maple necks are Nitrocellulose (and having both a Mahogany and a Maple neck PRS, the Mahogany finish is much slipperier!), and PRS are now doing a couple of models (the Modern Eagles I think) in a thin skin Nitro finish - curiously the nitro finish reacts with the foam rubber that coats many guitar stands and it will actually "eat" the nitro finish - my Custom 22 Soapbar came with a specific warning explaining this (which the store I bought it from had of course ignored)

They are GREAT guitars, and the finish and build quality is light years ahead of Gibson -any guitar will lose value if it is dinged (have a look at how condition affects JEM prices!), and while I am certainly a fan of true custom made instruments, at least with PRS you can generally get your hands on a dozen or so to compare the feel/quality etc before handing over large barrowloads of dollar bills!

Cheers
