REVIEW: New guitar from Sims

I had had high expectations for this guitar after reading so many reviews and seeing so many pictures of his work. Probably too high considering it is a very early guitar (number 3) and basically a prototype. Fortunately it did not dissapoint!

The guitar sounds greats and has tons of sustain. The neck feels great. The paint job is second to none, but of course that is what Sims is really known for.

The design of the guitar is what really got me. Patrick says it was influenced by four of his favorite guitars, plus quite a bit of his own creative ingenuity. If you really look at it for a while you start to see it a little bit. It is hard to tell just from pictures how cool this guitar really looks. And it's not a small guitar by any stretch. There is enough wood there to give it a nice solid tone. Next to my Zachary Z2 it looks pretty big.

Here is a link to the photobucket and a bunch more pictures:

Anyone hesitating to order one of these, don't! These have a great design and should really appeal to the masses. You would be hard pressed to find another guitar in this price range or even higher that is basically a custom shop masterpiece like this. I expect Sims to do very well with these.

Re: REVIEW: New guitar from Sims

I almost love it. There are a couple of minor issues;

The body looks an inch or two larger than I'd want. I always liked the offset body shape very much (Fender Jazz bass, Jaguar, Jaazzmaster, etc) but I'd prefer this one to be a little more slender behind the bridge and at the arm contour.

The position of the 5-way isn't ideal for me, I'd want the vol and tone knobs above the 5-way. Having to reach over trhe switch to get to the knobs doesn't seem quite right.

This is all personal taste, therefore fairly unimportant, and I know Pat spent a long time on the design so I wouldn't expect him to change a thing. However, these two things would probably put me off purchasing one (even if I could afford it).

Might fine axe, otherwise.

It's just a little fatter below the bridge than an RG. I should have pictured it with my Rg 20th. I'll take a couple more pictures when I get a chance. I put it on the scale and it weighs just a little over 7 pounds.
