RG 270 or 220B
After having been given advice from a friend, I am considering the purchase of an RG 270 as my first
electric guitar
. Originally, I was looking at the RG 220B, but I'm thinking the
Edge
trem is worth the extra $70 over the Licensed Floyd on the 220B. *Any other guitars in a similar price range (<$400) I should be considering? *Any helpful comments to help get me started would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well Mike, I think that an RG 270 would be a great choice for a first electric guitar. However it does not come with an
Edge bridge
. It ahs a cheaper version. Also be sure that you want the whammy bar because if you don't it will probably give you more trouble than benefit. Other guitars in the $400 price range that would be good fist electrics are (imo):
ESP LTD models
Jackson models
Used RG 570
Fenders seem to be reliable but really the decision is yours.

i would definetely recommend a used rg550 or 570. you could eventually replace the pickups and get a very high quality instrument.
if you buy used, focus on the frets and neck instead of looking for dings in the finish.
just my two cents.
good luck!!

I would settle for an RG170. *The 270 has the Lo-TRS II bridge, which you will find you be a headache compared to the fender type thing on the RG170. *The 170 is cheaper, and comes with all the real deal stuff including 24 jumbo frets. *It is a superior alternative to getting a strat. *The best guitar player I've ever met in person plays a 170 strung with 13
guage strings
, complete with tons of missing paint and dark freen sweat stains all over the neck and fingerboard (and nails driven into the body as
strap buttons
).
FOr a starter the presence of a floating bridge is probably just a hassle. *But if you must, you'll need to follow everyone else's suggestion and get an RG5xx, with the Edge. *If you feel a little queasy about laying down that much cash on a first guitar, Ill just tell you that my friend who recently started guitar bought a new RG570 as his first guitar and is having a blast. *He finds it to be the most comfortable guitar he has ever played, and testifies that it is noticable superior in feel to any of the other guitars he was considering.

If you want a good deal on an Ibanez, go for a used RG5XX. You'll get better wood, better build, and an
Edge trem
. You can find them for $150-$400, depending on the year and condition.

Go for the RG 5xx, the best bit being that if you really don't like it, that you'll get a good return on your money because you bought it second hand in the first place! Having a good guitar (even if it has dings etc in the finish) is a better way to go than getting a much cheaper one that new that you'll never be able to sell for the same amount you laid down for it. The floating trem may be a hassle to start with, but believe me you'll get your head around it very quickly, and after that it'll be a breeze.

Go with an RG5?? if you have to have an Edge. You can find a used one for a really great price. Stay away from anything that says Lo TRS! Here is a link to another thread in the Buy,Sell, and Trade forum here on Jemsite. Try this person out and see if there still available. If not just keep checking.
