Service - the real deal

This may or may not be the right place to put this, but:

South Africa is not a country renowned for its quality of service, and this lack of renown is pretty well deserved in general. However, I took my Yamaha FG in for a setup after being completely unable to figure out the best way to lower the action (this is the one with the back-mounted neck and an almost decked Wilkinson trem).

Cue two weeks later. I go in to collect the guitar. It looks and feels GREAT, action spot on, intonation great, frets really well crowned and sparkling. Manager comes in to speak to me - turns out the neck was chipped when taken off to be shimmed, but they'd had it filled recoated and polished up in the meantime.

Jacques :"Just here where it disappears under the back plate"
Me: "I can't see it."
J : " Yeah, they did a pretty good job>"
Me (glasses on by now) "I still can't see it."
J: "We feel really bad about this, what can we give you in return?"
Me "Nothing. You did such a great job fixing it, I wouldn't have noticed."
J: "No really, we felt really bad about it."

Since I didn't buy anything on the day, I was given a couple of free setups after they'd gone to the expense of getting it fixed beyond the limits of my eyesight (even enhanced).

Great service, needs a mention - South Africans: deal exclusively with Music Connection on Jan Smuts Ave. if you're around JHB. Everyone else, I hope you find a place as good as this.

i'm a south african too, but moved to australia age 7. from cape town.

south africa often gets a bad rep but i love it and i'm gonna move back there one day. it's the best place on the planet. the people are just so much more honest, friendly and alive than anywhere else i've seen.

glad you got a nice deal.

Aids avoidance is about common sense. That's all.

The water: depends where you are - Rand Water provides the utility for the Johannesburg region; it consistently scores as cleaner than London and is in the top 10 worldwide (which all score higher than most bottled types). Cholera outbreaks seem to have been Zimbabwean imports to informal settlements in the main, and there have been two minor ones in the last four years. Parasitic diseases such as bilharzia are a risk all over Africa, as are far larger hazards like hippos and crocs

Bit of a thread hijack there.

I go to music connection when I want new stuff (pedals etc) and also deal with Jacques and I must say I agree. I described what I wanted in an amp, and he took me straight to the H&K edition 20th, which was exactly what I was looking for. I also got my first Ibanez there, so obviously I have a soft spot for that shop

I was at a do there last night and they won SA Fender dealer of the year ...... 5th year running. Also got the ESP DoY. Fender execs reckon it to be one of the top 10 Fender walls worldwide.

Got up close and personal with the EVH Frankenstein clone (ZAR325 000 retail* - but it does come with a free DVD [!]) last night. It looks like it should smell bad.

*that's USD 46 250, give or take.
