Once I decide to keep a guitar that's got a painted neck the first thing I do is remove all the paint down to the sanding sealer. Sanding sealer is great stuff. You can make it super smooth and it doesn't get sticky when your hands get hot.
The pickups are cheap (£13 for the pair) 13k high output 3bay jobbies. I put them in, gigged them and fell in love with them. I've changed out all the pots and switches for switchcraft ones then I decided to disable the tone pots as I kept knocking them whilst playing live and wondering "what the hell has happened to my sound?". The tail and the tuners are stock Epiphone (hey, they do their job

) and I just had to spend about a half hour with a file on the nut.
Unfortunatly I'm not in a band at the moment but every now and again I'll get asked to show up at a gig with a guitar to guest on a couple of numbers. I always take the Epiphone.
Over Christmas stepped in with a friends band for 2 or 3 and at the end of the gig this guy came up to me and said "Nice playing but what were you playing that for? The other guy had a spare Gibson, why didn't you borrow a real guitar?" He made me feel about 2 inches tall and I didn't know what to say to him. On reflection I didn't borrow the spare LP because I have no connection with it. Mine isn't the greatest guitar or even a "real"
Les Paul but it's mine, we work together, it does as I ask and I just prefer it that way.
