Squire 51 Relic Update

Here's some updated pics from my Squire Relic project using Ibanez Collector's tutorial

Before:

After:

I have headstock decals on the way, then I am sending her off to IC to fix the neck, since my job on it was awful, and touch up some of the body work.

Very Cool!

Y'know, given that they are ridiculously good value for what you pay for 'em, and sadly discontinued, the Squier '51 might become the first collectible Squier..........

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

Im not sure about "ridiculouly good" value. Stock it had it's problems, but I suppose for a beginner it was ok. I had a few parts laying around to upgrade with so it didnt cost me much out of pocket.
I had the Gibson 57 Classic for the bridge laying around and pots and switches, and klusons. I had to buy the neck pickup (Fender Vintage Noiseless) and the new control plate since the original didnt have a spot for a 3 way switch. If I had known what a pain in the ass it was going to be to route out the control cavity for American pots and a 3 way, Im not sure I would've gone that way.

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

that's pretty sweet.

I wanna do a project like that later on.

probably with a standard fat strat.

how can I do that with a standard fat strat?

how much do you think it would cost?

Materials are cheap. All you really need is sandpaper and stain.
For tools, mainly a heat gun and screw drivers. The cost isnt much but it's time consuming. Ibanez Collector does it as side work too, otherwise he made a pretty good tutorial thats about 70 pages as a .pdf. I think its posted here, otherwise I could email it to you if you pm me your address.

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

That's pretty cool. Actually, one of my friends (who's getting quite decent at guitar) learned on a '51, and I played one, and they're surprisingly better than I expected.

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

Elcid, how is the neck on those 51's? Thick, thin, somewhere in the middle?

I'd call it thick. Thicker than my US Strat and a definite baseball bat compared to any Ibanez shredneck. Sorry, I realize I'm not Elcid but I have one of these little beaut's too, only I swapped the stock neck out with a Mexican Strat neck that I had lying around - much better now.

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

Thanks for the reply, Supermau. I didn't think it'd have a chunky neck.

Re: Squire 51 Relic Update

I've heard it described as thick, but I dont think it is. Of course I love the neck on my R7.

Just to be clear, we're talking about necks here, right? Ya never can be too sure when you're posting in a thread with the Elcid.
