Strat does not equal Les Paul.

I just started playing the guitar. About six weeks ago I bought a Fender Strat and have been learning on it.

Yesterday a guitar store guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a Gibson Les Paul.

I've discovered that I can play the Les Paul easier because of the width of the neck and the spacing of the strings.

Now what do I do with the Strat? For those of you with several guitars, do you have some you can play well and others not so well? Or do you try to set up the "not able to play so well" guitars identical to your favs?

Anything I buy that I don't like I sell it on again and get something I do like.

Simple as that.

If youre just starting, id say keep them until you realize all guitars are different, and youll develop a way of adjusting from guitar to guitar without much trouble...

I'm with Eggy. Get rid of it. You can get some much needed gear with that money. And there are too many guitars out there that feel 'right' to waste your time trying to adapt to one that doesn't. Get a better amp or some effects with the money. Or another guitar that feels right to you.

Les Pauls are prefered by some because of the neck angle, string height at where the picking hand is, and scale length. It's likely you'll gravitate towards guitar with more of a les paul feel. Examples of which are the Ibanez Iceman, Gibson SG, Ibanez Artist series. All these guitars have similar scale length and neck angles.

That's what I'm hoping. Because I really like the Strat. Actually, I'm thinking of setting it up to play slide guitar.

Is that practical?

Strats are great for playing slide. Mine works great as a slide and as a regular guitar.

I was under the impression that you set up a slide guitar differently. You can still play it regular?

If you really like the Strat, keep it. You will find that different guitars suit different sounds and msuic styles, better. I believe you should always keep a divserse arsenal. You will find that if you DO that, it will allow you to maintain a certain flexiblity in your playing.

Yep, some people prefer the action higher when they play slide, but it is not a rule.

As your skills improve, you will start to enjoy the strat.

Keep both. I would go nuts if I coulnt go back and forth between strat, super strat, and Les Paul types.

Liky Aryton said, in time you will appreciate both for what they are.

A law was passed on here this week on the compulsory ownership of a strat
by Satan himself.I propose the LP should be included as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for having many different guitars, PMC, GMC, LNG, VWH...

After being a guitarist for only a little over a month, I'm thinking a Martin acoustical would also be in this list.
