Thank god for the locking nut

I was practicing/warming up yesterday, getting ready for a jam session, and my wife calls me into the kitchen..to show me what 'my' son just did. So I put the guitar down a second, not putting it right back into the case as I usually do (with a 2 yo who's fascinated by guitars, it's a must as I don't have a wall hanger just yet) so I go in, see the wonderful artwork on the wall, and in that short instant he managed to run into our bedroom and start playing with my tuners. When I walk in, he gives a 'uh-oh' look, with a nice verbal 'uh-oh' to go with it. I find a couple strings quite floppy behind the nut. It's times like this I really had a les paul or similar just for jam sessions. Of course it didn't effect my tuning or anything, but I ran w/out the nut locked for quite some time. Had it not, the session might have been a no-go.

how long does it take to tune a guitar the regular way? a few minutes? can't see how that could ruin a jam session. i usually tune when i get to practice anyway as tuning can shift (even with a locking nut) just from temperature/humidity changes going from outside to the jam room.

That's nothing... dunno why, but my 1st string BROKE high before a rehearshal. I really dunno why it happened. And the locking nut HELD the string during two hours of rehearshal, believe or not. Of course, I did not use the whammy bar and softened my bends. Oh dude, that two hours were really tense... (pun intended)

BTW, that's great to know your kiddo is curious about guitars!

I've always wondered if the locking nut would hold a string in tune in that situation
