the mighty mighty faded explorer
well i've been jonesing for this guitar ever since i saw it. a new gibson explorer with a worn faded cherry finish (basically cherry stain, no clearcoat). all the other specs are the same as the reissues, which is good because i want the full body (as opposed to the pro series and it's smaller body). the best thing about this acquisition is that i got it for a great price. and at guitar center of all places, lol. anyway, enough of my gushing, here are the pics:
i lowered the action and it plays great. build quality looks very solid although the frets could've been dressed better.

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
I love explorers I wanted one soooooooooooo bad, then I played one and it was sooooo uncomfortable for me. I was really bummed out, but I still like to look at 'em and this one is no exception.
Great!

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
Awesome man, Im partial to the worn brown, but I think I may hold off and try to get a 50th Anniv. Explorer when they come out in October.
Kotor, I actually found the Explorer to be one of the more comfortable guitars to play sitting down

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
whew, i was beginning to think no one liked explorers over here (at least gibson explorers). seems very comfy to me sitting down and i dig that you can feel the body resonate when strumming it. i was actually digging on a natural burst finish (slightly bursting black edges to natural) that i saw a pic of online, but can't seem to find it anywhere.
one thing for sure, playing standing up you have to wear this guitar low. lol. it's almost a prerequisite

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
If I'm not able to get one of the 50th Anniv. models, my second choice is a natural. I almost picked up a natural burst a few months back but backed out at the last minute.

Explorers are great - I'd love a Matthias Jabs one with a floyd

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
i have an old explorer. i broke the headstock off years ago and had it repaired. it plays like utter crap now, but i still have it. at some point i'll sand the tongue oil back off, do a fret clean and setup, and do more tattooing to it then re-tongue oil it.

Re: the mighty mighty faded explorer
explorers are great. i have ojne and will sure get another with EMG's in it. I thought the faded was a stupid idea. I thought they sold for around a k wile the "normal" ones where just 200 more. It was not like the SG or LP where the price difference was dramatic

agreed, i dunno why the price was so similar to the price of the standard reissues when the others (sg, lp and v) were all around $650 - $699.
but i got mine for $750, so it's all good
