To Scallop or not to scallop that is the question...hehe
I own a esp
kirk hammett
quija board guitar and i just had it professionally set up. the action is extremely low. and its great for everything but bending on the high e on about 20 and above. I know the jems are scalloped from 21-24 and i'm thinkin about havin those
frets scalloped
on my hammett. heres what i need, would it make that big of an improvement. is bending easier even with low action with the scallopes? will it hurt my inlays?
Thanks
Phil

I have both styles of the Ouija, and unfortunately am unsure of how thick the inlays are on the fingerboard. As far as the difference it makes in feel... FOR ME, I don't notice that big of an improvement. My fingers don't really fit in between the frets that high up enough to notice it that much...lol I do feel it when I play there, but it isn't such a noticeable change that I'd alter a limited edition guitar over it. In the end, I just don't spend enough time playing there to alter a guitar over it. Like I said, I am also not sure how thick the inlays are, so I don't know how a deep scallop would afftect them. I see your tradeoff...the super-low action kinda leaves your strings not as easy to grab for a bend. Raising the action will help, but you'll sacrifice the feel of the lower setup. lol... Maybe go to a thicker string and keep the action the same? Might work...

I defer to those who know THAT guitar's setup.
However, I had my 7620 completely scalloped and prefer it that way.
The inlays were not affected by the scoops so I would imagine you'll retain the design, but you may also have a high fret at 21 or above, so maybe have a tech check it over.
My fingers don't fit in the higher frets either and the scallops help me articulate in the upper registers when I need to .
Hope this adds some info you can use.

Hmm...I will just say a similar thing as I did in the LP custom thread; your guitar is relatively rare and valuable, so before the mod, I would make sure that this is what you really want, and if you do decide to do it, that it is done professionally...

I would have to agree. But do your self a favor, and buy a replacement neck that is identical to the one on your guitar and scallop that one. If it works out then every thing is gravy, and later if you get tired of the fret work, or decide to sell it you can put your guitar back in relatively pristine condition.
If it doesn’t work out lesson learned,
and you can put your guitar back in to relatively pristine condition.
