Tone (and volume) control capacitors.

Just wondering why PRS use a 180pF cap on the volume control? Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan dont specify any cap for the volume control in any of their wiring diagrams. I think Ibanez specify a 330pF. What does it actually do, I thought the treble 'filter' was done via the tone control? Also, Duncan advise that a .047uF cap is used for the tone control, Dimarzio and PRS specify .022uF, what difference does it make to the tone control - even more treble cut off with the .047uF, or less?

Any help appreciated!

(yeah I just realised this is in the wrong section sorry)

Re: Tone (and volume) control capitors.

The cap bleeds treble directly to the output when you roll back the volume. It's intended to keep the tone from getting dull when turning down the volume, but it has no effect when the volume control is all the way up.

Re: Tone (and volume) control capacitors.

So on something like the JS1200, (which has the push pull volume pot), does this 'switch in' the 330pF cap which is normally a permanent feature on most other Ibanez guitars, where as when not engaged the cap is actually bypassed?

No, I believe the push/pull feature on the JS guitars activates the coil tap.

yes, i'm not certain if it's that model but i know atleast one of the JS series has a push pull that switches the cap

Re: Tone (and volume) control capitors.

Guess I should've done my homework before opening my fat mouth. You are correct. The push/pull on the tone pot activates the coil tap, and the push/pull on the volume switches the volume cap in and out of the circuit. This applies to, as far as I know, only the JS1200 and JS1000.
