what is a baritone guitar - Baritone guitat ?

I have heard the term before but what is it and what is the guitars main purpose? Is there a distinctive sound to it please explain

I´m no expert when it comes to baritones, but I think it has a longer neck that has two extra frets so that the normal tuning on the guitar is actually D-G-C-F-A-D instead of E-A-D-G-B-E,
Somebody correct me if I´m wrong, but
with a baritone you don´t have to have so thick strings and the guitars playability stays the same, and you can still play those high notes...
but I´m sure someone can explain it a little better...
