Re: What is with the Gibson Les Paul craze?

Some Gibsons are certainly overpriced and, from what I've seen after picking out a new 2008 Studio, you really do have to sort through a bunch to find the right one.

For example, I tried a Vintage Mahogany that sounded good when plugged in, but kind of lifeless acoustically. The bottom of the fingerboard didn't mate up perfectly with the neck in some spots, and you could feel it running your hand up and down the neck. That's absurd for anything that's not a Walmart special.

Tried an alpine white Studio, which had a warped pickup ring. Another had severe discoloration near the headstock from the wall hanger. Eventually I settled on this one, which I can't find a flaw in. The tone is just right for me, both acoustically and when plugged in.

Gibson is still putting out some superb instruments. But I never have to cherry pick Ibanez's or USA Fenders just to find one without an obvious flaw or two.

Blah blah blah Gibson is overpriced. There are several Les Paul models available for under $1000.

Absolutely. A good Vintage Mahogany LP can be had new for about $800. I was tempted since it gets the same Burstbucker pickups as in the Standards and has a cool satin finish. For the money it's a very nice guitar, assuming you find one without any real flaws. And don't forget the Faded SG's and V's go for $700 all day long and I've heard lots of good things (have yet to try any, though).

Haha but for $715? with ebony fretboard and a very nice flame maple? In the Gibson world it would probably costs > USD$2500

Of course in 5 years you can still get close to $2500 for a Gibson, good luck getting $300 for the knock off.

Personally, I think $700 is too much for any Korean guitar.

So this can happen, generally speaking you are right of course, but sh*t happens.
Your right Tank, my appologies.
I was mearly making the point that as far as potential issues go, Fixed bridges are more inclined to little to no (assuming that the tuners are not for just ornamentation alone) tuning issues, where as the inxperianced may have issues with, or just be plain daunted by a Floyd type system. It all just takes patence and the acceptance that Double locking Trems require more user mantenece.

Ok sermonizing over...
Is now a bad time to see if anyone wants to buy my Paul?

PS Andy7 if lifes so pointless why not top yourself?
Or jump on the Porn/Forum happieness plan

Re: What is with the Gibson Les Paul craze?

Every decade seems to be associated with one particular type of guitar (in my opinion...it's just what I've noticed). In the 1950's it was the Gretch style semi-acoustic guitar. In the 60's it was the Stratocaster. In the 70's it was the Les Paul. In the 80's, there was a return to the Stratocaster, and the addition of the super-Strats that we all know and love....etc. It just seems to be that way. And right now, maybe the Les Paul is having it's day again.

I am looking for a used 1960 reissue with a plain top now, so I have no shame for my Les Paul desires.
