Pretty wild. Check out this link. Janet Harlow plays a 10-string classical & it sounds wonderful.

Well, if my mum and dad were siblings and I had been born with 7 fingers on each hand...

Somehow I believe Rusty Cooley could handle one of these well. As for me? A 7-string is painful enough on my wrist. My wrist is aching just looking at the pictures! None the less it's interesting. Thanks for posting the pics.

Is it me, or are there only 5 tuning pegs for said number of strings?

I think I'll take a stab at this one.....
The remaining tuners are on the other side of the headstock.
Unusual, I know........

This is really old news. The concept of alto guitars with eleven strings, tuned in G as opposed to E, was pioneered by Swedish luthier Georg Bolin in the 1970´s. He also made contra guitars, tuned in regular tuning but with as many as seven (7) added basses, giving you an extra octave downwards.

The alto guitars were intended for transcriptions of lute music from the renaissance, Dowland and co. There are also excellent recording of Bach's lute works played on alto guitar by Göran Söllscher, professor at Lunds University. Landmark recording, really, that no classical guitarplayer should be without. No electric guitarplayer either, for that matter.

If you consider purchasing one of these instruments don't think of it as a guitar, but as an alto guitar. They tend to have pretty narrow string spacing compared to its classical cousin. It also takes a while to get used to muting the basses, and mute you will! That said, there are some great ones to be had. I've only played alto guitars made by Georg Bolin and his one time student Michael Sandén. If you get hold of a good Bolin you'll have a truly great instrument to cherrish for the rest of your life. HIs guitars are not big in volume but very rich in tone and with great posibilities to modify that tone with your right hand. Demanding guitars, yes, but rewarding none the less.

Wasn't there one being played by some little oriental chick in the movie "Crossroads"? Maybe a 10-string...
