Isn't pretty terrible now? Most of their new models pretty much neglect small detail quality because, for the most part, the players of them aren't going to scope out these issues.

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

Their guitars are so hit and miss now. I've played some great ones and i've played some absolutely horrid ones. It's a shame that people continue to buy them. For $1,000+, you'd think you could get a guitar consistent to the specs and feel of others(not to say all guitars should feel the same).

Blah blah blah new gibsons suck....
I've owned Gibsons from the 70s, 90s, and 00s with no complaints about anything.

I second that. Have 3 and they are great. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with them and worth every (EVERY) cent.

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

Gibson have churned out great guitars in every era, but the bad bad Norlin years (mid seventies to early eighties) produced some astoundingly awful instruments (think Sonex, Maurauder, L6, S1, fifty piece Les Pauls that weighed 12 pounds, Mark acoustics - blechhhhh!!!) produced some very unloveable guitars - they couldn't even get the carving on the tops of Les Pauls correct!!!

The current Les Paul Standard is a great guitar, and in context is great value for money. Wouldn't swap my PRS Custom 22 for one though.....!

Cheers,

David

Third it. My 02/03 SG Standard is flawless, crazy gorgeous, and the smoothest playing guitar I've ever encountered. The stock pups rock too.

FWIW, I've never noticed any drop in quality, from any era.

Handmade in the USA, what more could you ask for?

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

I would say the 70's just because they made some of those realy weird looking sg's with the bad pickguards, and the shallow headstock angle. I think all years of Gibsons were good though.

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

I remember reading a Les Paul review in Guitarist magazine in about 02/03, where the reviewer commented that Gibson had finally resolved their quality control issues.
I'm sure there are outstanding instruments from all mentioned decades, and some firewood.

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

you should have asked which decade, since your poll is by 10s.

I'm also sure that the guitar up for review was hand picked.
There's more firewood out there than there ever needs to be, although the rough is the same price as the smooth.....?????

Re: Worst year for Gibson guitars

Ben, I was more thinking about the statement that there had been quality control problems.

10 years is a decade

I'd say the 50's is worst coz if you want one now they're very rare and ludicrously expensive!!
