Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...

I just got back from a students house. He had a Fender Squire sitting in the corner. I asked to play it. It played and sounded good. He didn't play it because it's Squire. But I thought the tone was usable, and it was as playable as anything I'v played. I tried t buy it. He wouldn't sell. It was a gift from his parents. He also had a 20th Anniversary LP. I guess I just don't like LP's. I've never played one I likes, not even a little bit. Not even enough to keep if given to me.

I never said not to buy the guitar you like.

If it feels good in your hands and sounds good that's all that matters. and I also stated in my post "It all comes down to what you like, what you could afford and how you use it".

I was just saying IMHO that if you buy american you're helping out our economy, and you should really care about the economy because it affects us in more ways than we think, just as voting will affect an election. if you don't care about the economy, you are are saying that you are not gonna complain if a recession or depression comes though it would affect your daily life, prices of goods, etc etc. But whats sad is many people these days don't give a crap about anything until something bad happens and affects them in a negative way.

And trust me a recession and depression in the economy sucks. It will ultimately affect your life in a negative way.

Any tone gains you get with the $2000 Suhr could easily be lost in a tweak of a knob on a pedal or mixer. So it's just not worth it. If you coverin Sweet Home Alabama, and playing it well, the audience doesn't give a flying monkey how much you spent. And frankly, at this stage in life. The logo on the headstock is meaningless. Lots of expensive guitars n youtube sounding pretty darn sucky the way they are being played. So when you hear a guitar demoed on youtube, and you think you don't like the tone....it's not the guitar.

Now here's the funny part. I plan on buying a Chromie some day, and playing the heck out of it. And not for tone, but just because it's something I want to do. The cost will not be justified by anything other than. "I want it."
While I don't disagree with your sentiment Darin, there is a world of difference in the quality of a Squier and, say a Suhr, and, yep, with enough tweaking, fret levelling, setting up etc etc etc, you can make a Squier into a pretty cool axe, but I just wouldn't trust one, particularly electronics wise, to be a reliable gig-monster...

At the end of the day, as you say, all the toys in the world won't make you a good player - that's perseverence and elbow grease - but good gear WILL inspire you to give your best!

Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...

Hey, I'm not prepared to argue that a Squire is as good as a more expensive guitar. Just that, there is really no NEED to spend thousands. It's not like you couldn't gig with a Squire. No one in the audience cares what your playing. We buy expensive guitars only because we want to. Kind of like me buying a $32K used truck. Didn't need it. A beater Ford...... well, a beater Chevy......Um, I mean, a beater Dodge would have pulled my trailer for me. But I wanted this snazzy deisel 4x4 quad cab badness in my driveway.

Not even different enough for the average person to notice. And get this. The Squire was set up and played better. I know it crazy. But it's absolutely true. Now I've had expensive guitars. I played professionally for 4 years. I considered buying a Tom Anderson a couple years ago for $2400. I've come to the serious conclusion that you can spend all you want on quality and refinement. No one but you will notice or care. The average person will dig your songs if they are good, and wont care about your hand made guitar. And here's the truth. ANY guitar sounds as good as you play. Period.

Well. There ya go. Spend all you want. But if you suck. You're going to suck on a hand made guitar. But if you can take care of business, you'll sound great on even a Squire.

-Darin

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Don't EVER judge a guitar by the name or pricetag. Leave it up to the individual guitar. I've saved myself LOTS of money on musical equipment, as a result. Most often, unless you are a pro musician, filling venues every night, the higher end stuff is just money pissed away. We all wanna be rock stars. the harsh reality is, very few of us are.

Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...

I always get given a hard time for this, but here goes.
I once went down to my local guitar store, getting my SG set up and to check out the gear etc. etc. They let me try out a PRS custom 24, and it really wasn't that great. It wasn't terrible or anything, I just wouldn't pay the price they were asking for it. Maybe I just got a bit of a dud and they were trying to push it onto me, I dunno. Still, it was quite disappointing.

Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...

I haven't read the whole thread as it's mostly been done before

But i will just add my guitar teacher when i first started playing many years ago played a Squire Strat. It looked like an old beater that was covered in stickers. He set it up amazingly though, fitted a kahler trem, i think he fitted a Gibson humbucker in it. Didn't bother filling in the holes where the old single coils went adding to the beater look. But it played like a dream. To this day probably one of the most comfortable guitars i've ever played!!!

I have a lot more respect for the guy that makes his 20 year old POS sing and wail over the guy that has $50,000 worth of gear and barely plays. That just irks me... kinda like the wanna-be Harley riders vs. the guys that have been doing it since they could balance themselves.

Passion vs. Fashion.

It's updated. When I save the update page I use and overwrite the file name it doesn't change the date counter. Even though I do have way more to list.
