Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...
thats a good point, but that judgement is fairly bias and its only viewed from a audiance POV. but from a guitarist POV, i would say that sound isnt everything. yea, sound it the big part, but hey, if i'm telling to to play, blindfolded and using a ear plug, comparing a ****ty squire vs a...say, a USA jackson DK1 (bolt on) or a
ibanez jem
thats also a bolt on, i'm 100% dammed sure that anyone would not pick the squire because of the neck + wood quality. hey, i wouldnt mind spending big $$$ on my gear, i know i'm getting something that makes me play better. yes, no one else care, your audiance doesnt care. but go ahead and use ****ty guitar on stage and try to play well. i doubt that you'll be famous using a mere 200 bucks guitar.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Player makes the gear, but the gear doesn't make the player

Again, if you can play well it doesn't matter what you use, "If it sounds good, it most likely
is
good"

so you basically said that all that wood quality, craftmenship's quality, and the wood used, the quality of parts used, etc are a bunch of placebos?
i wouldnt say so. heck, if you feel that way, then isnt it better to sell all your expensive guitar and get a few squire strats? the money from it would come in handy, probably in upgrading those squires or so.

Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...
There are those guitars that can be upgraded and sound amazing. Hell, even the Squier you were just knocking can sound good if you throw a JB/59 Lil Bucket set and maybe a Cool Rails in the middle.
If I go out and throw down $2,000 on a Jem, I'm not gonna be
Steve Vai
, I'm gonna be me with a $2,000 guitar plain as that. You're gear is only as good as you are. While wood, and craftsmanship do play a role in sound its not like the only good sound guitars are at $700+
Hell, I actually just got back from Daddy's where a good majority of my time was spent playing a $300 Epi SG, and I liked it just as much as the Faded Gibson SG I played 3 days ago. Price of equipment doesn't equal amount of talent.

does it always go toward sound? seriously, sound is affected by the guitar, but hell, use a 8k worth of amp and you'll make a squier sounds like an metal god.
and yes, isnt it pretty obvious, buying an artist's siggy guitar doesnt make you to be that specific artist, rather, you'll get a very nice guitar that's supposed to be a top notch and it suppose to have a better playability than your plain old squire. hey, if you're happy with your squire, good. and as for gibsons, heck i couldnt tell the diff between epi and gibson guitars, they feel the same, sound the same...same baseball like neck.but since i'm more of a jackson person, i would be able to tell the diff between a plain old JS series vs a...say a pro series that has a string through due to its wood quality + craftsmanship.

Can't agree with that at all. It's only ever as good as the weakest link in the chain, and apart from cheap cables that's usually the person supplying the fingers.

OK, so you can't. Maybe others can? People can tell good cheese from bad cheese by knocking on it. Tubes and drumsticks are matched with a little hit. People can tune into these little details if they are interested enough.
If you devoted your life to noticing the tonal differences between indian and bolivian rosewood, I think you would manage.

Exactly. I bought a Squire Standard Strat, dropped in a JB Jr., and am just fine playing out with it. Plays great. AND, one of my OTHER guitars is an Ibanez RG220, with the Edge III trem. Again, I've not had ANY qualms about this guitar, either. Guitar snobbery is for the stupid. Play the instrument, and don't rely on name, only. I believe Paul Gilbert recorded a decent amount of Racer X's first album with a Squire. seemed to serve him just fine, judging by those tracks.

pfffrt omfg (just saw this vid for the 1st time). totally ridiculous really. I felt some truth in Darin's initial message, but this indeed settles it. I've been reading en surfing for hours last weeks to get me informed on a new guitar. Now I feel guilty I didn't rather just practice all these 'wasted' hours. (internal note: "AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaarrrrg...."). That guy must've had the biggest intravenous motivator shot ever that evening lol. I'm gonna go and sit down for a while (with a guitar)
.

Good gear won't MAKE you play better for sure.
However, if you have the great chops good gear makes it easier to play to your ability. I suppose you can say it LETS you play better.
Sure Satch and Vai can play cheap guitars great because they are great players. But it is easier to play a well made guitar.

Re: Your gonna hate me, maybe even ban me...
Lets have a test.
Go to
www.myspace.com/mikeolmeda
and listen to "Desperate Measures" then tell me what guitar I used. I know, it might come off as an underhanded way to get ears to listen to my stuff but it isn't the best recording quality either.
I'd be interested in seeing if anyone can guess.
I'll agree that good gear can help.
Cheers!

You can try to say that I'm inexperienced all you want, but I think you misunderstood my post. I was pointing out the fact that a JS is in fact a very nice guitar. And he refered to it as if it was a cheap low end guitar. I agree that an American masters is a good guitar (great even) but it's stupid to refer to a JS as the other end of the spectrum. I can tell the difference between good and crappy guitar. I have indeed spent many years playing guitars and learning the differences. You just assumed I was talking about whether a cheap guitar is as good as an expensive gutiar and I've never been on that side of the argument.
You were first totally mistaken on what I was saying. Ok so
you
can't understand what I was trying to say but others can. Thanks for the lecture in stuff I already know.
