7 String gauge question....

Hey there guys, i finally found a way to beat the Edge Pro system... Just tune em up one semitone higher and it'll work its way back down...

But heres my dilemma, im using a RG2077XL and i use .10-.56 with the tuning AEADGBE. I like a good tight 7th string for fast tremolo picking ala Meshuggah but my 7th string seems a lil floppy. Should i get a higher gauge or a lower one? What do you guys recommened? I'm shooting for stuff off Chaosphere and I....

And im pretty happy with the rest of the strings, they ring pretty well and sustain great for clean jazz chords and stuff..... So what gauge should i place for the 7th string? Thanks.

it would be a good idea to bump up the 7th string gauge to around a .58, or .60 if you're a little more ballsy.

Damn, thats just sick.... Can you get any definition out of a string that thick? A powerchord will sound like a blast of noise..... Whats the gauges for the other strings?

Probably more so than a string that's too slack, IMO.

I also tune in Drop A tuning for my current band & that gauge will work fine for ya. And since you mentioned Meshuggah, they use a 60 for Low Bb (7th string) & a 70 for the Low F (8th string). Just FYI.

I tune to regular tuneing with 11's and a 70 for the A I like thick strings it gives me more feel and tone on string bends also the band nevermore uses 70 for there low string although i don't Know what they tune to I think it just half/step down

How is soloing on those thick strings?

I use .011 to .070 on my seven-string and don't have any problems at all with soloing. (What little soloing i do, that is.)

Yes, Loomis uses a set of 10-52 strings with a 70, tuned 1/2 step down, in Nevermore.

Personally, I use a set of 9-46 strings with a 58 or 60 a half step down.

I use 10-52 and a 60 for the low-B on my Schecter, but I want a heavier low string. I use 10-52 on my Strat too, but it's usually in drop-D down a whole step (though I do use it in standard sometimes too). Sometimes I tune my Schecter up a half or whole step.

i agree, 11 is the perfect gauge in between heavy and light. 10's are fine for an XL, but even that is stretching it.

do you ever play someone else's guitar with 9's? do you agree that they feel like spaghetti (and sound it too) in comparison?
