you got me on ash, that's an opinion thing. i like heavier guitars. other than that, why can't i just not like it?

i've been playing off and on for over 16 years, i know what i like and don't like.

Ok, but you should clarify these things. What you said came across as "Schecter sucks, they make cheap guitars, ash and alder suck", when really you meant to say "I personally didn't like it, I prefer a heavier guitar while the one I tried was very light".

And trust me, there are heavy Schecters (mahogany good enough for you?).

i think most take it for granted that when someone says something, it's implied that it's their opinion. to which they are entitled.

"so what" on the other hand says "your opinion is irrelevant to me".

I also think that most take it for granted that, in polite discourse, one puts ones' opinion forward in a manner that is both polite and respectful towards others. food for thought.

i just don't see why me saying it felt like plywood is insulting, it's a material object. but i guess it was taken that way, so i'm sorry if it offended any schecter fans.

It's not insulting, it's misinformation. In a discussion about guitars of all brands, where Schecter has gotten some fine reviews, what's the point of putting "It felt like plywood" without explaining why, to you, it felt that way?

Besides, a plywood guitar would probably be pretty heavy

I'm no Schecter expert by any means, but I played a C-1, mahogany body w/SD JB and SD '59 pickups, and it rocked! One of the nicest 6-strings I've come across as far as sound and playability. Looked nice, too, it a simple sort of way.

Definitely didn't feel like plywood.

They weren't really in style when I bought mine in '95, they may not be in style in '05, who cares.

It's bad enough to hear a lousy player on a 6, it's even worse on a 7 because they tend to rely on pounding the low strings, very often with a sludgy, muddy tone. I met a guitarist a while back that had some kind of custom made 4 string guitar with heavy gauge strings and only one EMG bridge pup. It was made JUST for crunch rhythm, hence four strings. Although I must say, he sounded great! He really had that sound nailed. Maybe that's what some of the 7 players out there in nu metal bands should be playing LOL, since they obviously don't make much use of 7.

BTW the guitarists of Korn should really get down on their knees and kiss Steve Vai's feet for being the inspiration for the UV. The UV was the biggest gimmick Korn used for notoriety, they can thank Steve for the Bentleys and mansions they have (no doubt they are far wealthier than Vai). They owe their fortunes to that guitar........

nothing against vai, he smokes for certain... no one will deny this. i love his skills.

but korn and a lot of others are doing the one thing vai still hasn't done... make albums for people other than guitarists. i love vai, but getting 1 album down is hard man. you need more than techinal skills to keep it in the cd player.

of course, you don't need 7 strings to get that sound... or as you said 4. sepultura used to play with the high E and B removed, i think that gimmick started there.

korn is due their respect.

ps - i was kidding about the style comment. i play a 7.

it's a question of intent. Especially after listening to his vocals on "The Ultra Zone" (I had to double check to make sure it wasn't Live's Ed Kowalzyk on "Voodoo Acid"), I have no doubt that Vai could make an amazing, palatable, straight-ahead rock album with a few blistering solos tossed in if he wanted to. Thank god (and this is coming from a guy who isn't a huge vai fan), he doesn't want to.

I admire Vai, not for his amazing technique, but because he's WAAAY off in left feild somewhere doing his own thing, pop culture be damned.

yes, you are right, it is about intent. he's always been into the zappa, oddball thing. it's like he goes out of his way to push listeners away. that's cool.... i guess.

that's great for him and all... but i wish i could like him more. my favorite vai stuff is his playing for other artists, also crossroads.

now satriani on the other hand is brilliant. amazing ability... and you can listen to any of his albums over and over, even non-musicians.
