7 String pickups

Hey, I'm new here.
That out of the way, I ordered an Ibanez RG1527, my first 7 string, and I was thinkin of changing the pick ups. I'm in a bit of a Progressive Thrash Metal band. Although I like to play stuff like Nevermore, old Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Opeth, Fear Factory, AFI, Alice in Chains.... Well, my guitar god is Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. Anyway, I was thinking of throwing in EMG 707's, but diddn't want to route the body to put them, or at least for the time being. I was thinking a DiMarzio Evolution 7 and a Blaze 7.
Anyway, any advice on what pickups I should pick up (ands what position)? Or maybe I should keep the pick ups that come with the RG1527?

You should definately give it a listen before you do anything. I had a guy that had a CT [Blazes] on hold and when he came to pick it up wanted to try the 2027 [V7 & V8], he took the 2027 because he thought it sounded heavier

If I'm correct in assuming the RG1527's pickups are similar to the RG7420's pickups, I've heard them. I was actually gonna get a RG7420, played the axe too, very nice, but then I found out it was discontinued. Guess its a good thing though, as the RG1527 sounds like its a lot nicer of an axe overall.
If I'm wrong to assume, sorry...
But yes, I'll wait to play the axe to make sure

I noticed Tool and Smashing Pumpkins in there, while they're very heavy, they're also very passive pickups in sound, you'll need passives (pref. Gibson stock pickups) for that sound. Otherwise, EMGs are schweet

If you want the Smashing pumpkins sound, you'll need Lace Sensors, but they don't come in sevens. James Iha doesn't use them, but Billy Corgan ends up playing most of the guitars anyway.

Well, when I say Tool (even though them and Nevermore are my two favorite bands), I kinda meant how progressive they are. Like how they start a song, then it kinda builds up, only to drop down again, and slowly build into its finale (sometimes repeating whatever steps). Opeth too. I kinda want to incorporate that element into the music I make, while still being Hard (Nevermore) and Thrashy (80's Metallica) with some Punk/Hardcore (AFI), maybe a tad of softer elements sometimes (again, like some Nevermore), thus hopefully getting a bit 'Pregressive' (I'm starting to think I'm way off...). Forget I said Smashing Pumpkins as much as I love them, although I'll take whatever advice you guys said on that matter...

Rich is right. Wait til you get the new guitar, see how you like it, then go from there. As always, we recommend checking the pup sites (Dimarzio, Duncan, EMG) and look at their charts and recommendations on each pup. ;-)

I'm assuming the 1527 shipps with Dimarzio "New 7" pickups, like the 7620... They have a VERY thick low end to them, if you want heavy rhythm work, i think they'll be perfect. Not the best lead guitar pickups, but it doesn't sound like that's what you'll be using them for...

the 1527 ships with the same pickups as the 7420/7421, the V7 and V8s... which i found to be quite muddy on my 7421.

Well, in my band I'll be rhythm, but I'll have the ocassional leads and solos. Plus I take as much part in writing the music as everyone else...

I kind of like my BlazeII's that are in my UV now, they have definetly grown on me, but then again, my amp does most of the work, I prefer it that way.

Appart from that, I would recommend evolution7 in the bridge if you want thrashy sounds. That pickup is clean, tight and defined with plenty of output. As for the neck, I have less of an idea... Just not a PAF7, I hate the one I have, very weak soulless pickup.

i really like the BlazeII that i put in the bridge in my 7421.. going from the stock pickup to that was like night and day. if I get a 1527, i'll put either Blazes, or Evo7's in it.

i don't know what kind of wood that model guitar is, but i have used the Duncan JB7 in my basswood 7620s for years to get a great thrashy tone, plenty of chunk but the midrange still retains some character instead of being totally scooped. i've also used the Custom 7 in mahoganoy 7s. you might look into those if you like Duncans or have used their 6 string pickups.
