7 string reccomendations - What to buy?

I am looking for a 7 string. Maybe a UV777BK, a ESP Stephen Carpenter Signature, the New K-7 or maybe building my own. Any reccomendations on any of these? Thanks

IMO, the ESP H-307 is a very beautiful guitar with nice features (neck through body, tunamatic bridge, strings through body), but it doesn't have a trem on it that i know of... * it all depends on what you are looking for. *
keep in mind i haven't played one, but if i was in the market for a new guitar today, this is the guitar i would check into.

Man all i know is that the UV's are beautiful guitars
and that almost any 7-string ive picked up besides a Ibanez (and ive tried many) seem to lack in certain areas. In my opinion its not worth the hassle. Sure i can work around the little oddities or flaws, but why?

Now building your own sounds like somthing interesting. Or even buying one and getting rid of the oddities I just spoke of. Now that would be ideal.

I was planning to get a Gibson SG standard,
mainly for the mahogany body. Now
I've been struck with beautiful news:
the RG 7620 has a mahogany body!
What do you think of this comparison?
Have you found this model to be able to withstand
what the UV can? Or at least compared to an SG,
how to they stack up?

As a UV777PBK player I'm cautious here. I'm
still thinking of a new UV. However due to being
undecided on that, I've turned to another guitar
plan which is the SG. But if the 7620 can match it,
I'll buy it. Sorry to bombard with so many things,
but without forums where will I go, to a professor?
Dr. Hill's cool about explaining how cd players do digital
filtering, but his RG knowledge may be a bit limited.

The soon to be discontinued RG7620 has a basswood body. Full specs in the Jemsite --> Guitar --> Ibanez 7-Specs area.

yep, just found that out. it's the 7420 that
is mahogany but that one will unfortunately not
do; no blaze, no low pro edge.

Nope. I don't know where you're getting your information from, but all the standard RG series 7's have basswood bodies.

The S-7420, the AX-7521 and the RG2027X have mahogany bodies.

They are right i just striped down my RG 7421 and it is definatly bass wood. If your looking for a 7 string and your already use to the UV then the switch to a RG2027, or a RG7620 would be a sintch. I have them both. I tend to favor the neck of the 2027 over the UV. It has less of a satin finish. Although i do have to say the UV has a little bit lower action. Either way ive done fine switching between them, and they all get the job done.

Back to the original question...

The UV/K-7 and the ESP Stephen Carpenter model are kinda different beasts.

The ESP has a neck-through body and probably a painted neck, which some players may not like too much. It's also got a more unconventional pickup layout (which personally i like) and no trem... again, not for everyone.

I think pretty much everyone knows what to expect of a UV. They're great guitars. From the sounds of it, the K-7 will be excellent, too, with slightly more subdued aesthetics.

I quite like the looks of the ESP H-207, though its lack of trem would bug me. I don't use the trem on my guitars all that much, but i do like it to add subtle shading to chords or to do subtle note slides and dips. I'm surprised ESP doesn't offer a 7-string in their standard line, just in the Korean-built LTD series.

You could also consider getting a Carvin, too... their DC-727 and 747 look like great guitars for the money. I do wish they'd use some lighter woods for the body wings, though. Solid maple guitars are heavy!

But if you're interested, give the self-build route a go! Warmoth has everything you'd need to make a 7-string, though their body styles are limited to two choices. Still, it opens up a lot of possibilities for getting exactly what you want.

I have a UV777BK and am very happy with it, although I've been considering a 2027VVX. Those are beautiful guitars as well (these are just Ibanez btw).

Brian Moore makes a nice one, but it doesn't really suit me (I played it, it was nice, but it felt funny).

I have played the ESP's (including the Stephen Carpenter model) and liked them, but I think the SC model is kind of pricey for what it is.

Bottom line is play as many as you can. You'll know the 'right' one when it bites you.

I say go UV man, I love 'em and my others don't even compare. *Just my opinion

I'm currently narrowing right around RG2027X territory.
I'm having difficulty find info. on ibanez's pages.
Mahogany body - thank you for wonderful news.

perhaps swirling a guitar without a pickguard is a bad
idea. i definitely agree that i won't be able to
part with the original finish of the UV777PBK.

Check the baritone 7-string Ibanez... I think that's an amazing axe!
