7 Stringed Guitars Are...
..****. Not to me, my friend says they are for phags and for Korn fans. I think his statement somewhat a dumbass thing to say. It all started when I talked to him at school, about getting a new guitar. I was thinking of getting a 7-string and told him, then thats when he made his statement. There are plenty of musicians who used 7s, Vai,Satch, Petrucci just to name a few. I thought i need to express some of my anger, but meh, all he listens to his Metallica and does what ever
Kirk Hammett
Does.

Re: 7 Stringed Guitars Are...
I hear ya man
I was telling this "show off" kid back in high school that I was thinking about getting a Ibanez 7 string, he looked at me and laughed, then he said "why get a guitar with 7 strings if you can't even play one with 6?"
that guy was a metallica mark too...
in the end, I got the 7 string, played the hell out of it , lost my job and had to sell it to a fellow Jemsite user.
I can't say I want one now, I got so used to 6 strings...

Good for your friend. I'm sure that opinion will most certainly make him a more enlightened and talented musician.

Re: 7 Stringed Guitars Are...
Your friend listens to Metallica eh? Ask him if he knows who Kirk Hammett's old teacher was. When he tells you he doesn't know, tell him who it was, and, if he knows, then tell him to listen to
Joe Satriani
's "Is There Love In Space" album.
Personally, I see a use for a 7 string guitar but it's limited unless you're trying to write songs specifically for a 7 string guitar. Most of the stuff people write these days sounds pretty good on a 6 string but, then again, you got bands like korn that play 7 strings everyday and that's their trademark. On the other side of the coin, you got guys like
Steve Vai
and Joe Satriani who can play a 7 string guitar but, do not use a 7 string guitar as their main instrument.

Re: 7 Stringed Guitars Are...
Thinking a 7 is for nothing more than mindless chug is just plain silly. If you are a painter would you rather have 6 colors on your palette or 7? For some Im sure 6 is fine, but there will always be those that wouldnt mind the extra option.
I play 7's almost exclusively now and I cant remember the last time I played a "chug chug" song. I use the seventh string to extend scales, arps, and heaven forbid, chords with an actual Major or minor 3rd in them.

Re: 7 Stringed Guitars Are...
What I still don't get is that some people don't seem to get that in standard tuning there are only five more notes on a seventring (B, C, C#, D, D# then it's back to good old E). So it's not necessarily the added notes that make me personnaly use a my UV so much but (i) I love/much prefer wider necks and (ii) the way you can finger licks are interesting when compared to a six string, although you defintaly are playing notes that can be found on a six string for the most part, at least for me that's how I play my sevenstring
Makes it also interesting forr chord enrichments and not necessarily
death metal
chords, lol.

Weirdly enough, I definitaly see it as a seven string and not six string with one more string, if that makes any sense

Talking about korn in the same paragraph with Satriani and Vai is VERY wrong!!! you are being very disrespectfull to Joe and Steve!!
