Doug Pinnick of King's X also used a 12 string bass for a few years. Huge sound. The strings are grouped in 3's like a 12 string guitar is in twos. So each note you play also sounds the 5th and an octave above the root.

A 12 string was also used for the intro to 'jeremy' by pearl jam...

Tom Peterson of Cheap Trick is known for the 12 string bass. Not sure if he came up with it?

He wanted a sound as huge and powerful as a piano. Listen to some of CT's stuff...live, their sound is big!

Actually, I've owned a few 12vers (that's their nickname) & the 2 small strings are most commonly tuned in unison & are the same gauge. This creates a wonderful chorus effect. And yes, the sound is HUGE!

I would, if he's playing 12s now. Especially if he's tuning it as low as the guitarists are.

That would be Gustaf Helm. I've never heard him use it (live or recording). He's now just the touring bassist. He used Spector basses up until a few years ago. Now, he's switched over to an Ibanez BTB series.

I remember hearing that Gustaf was using a 12 string bass on tour. Anyone know what songs he uses it for?

I remember seeing Kings X with Joe Satriani and Dream Theater on Tour last summer. That was a great show. Doug used the 12 string, and it sounded so freakin awesome. That thing could growl and scream all at once!
