Building/Scale Length question..
Ok, heres my 'situation' if u wanna call it that... I have an Ibanez RG1527 neck that I got from my friend, but I have no body for it, and I want to make a body for it (which I can do no problem, and I know all the 7's Ibanez makes currently are 25.5" scales -not including the ax7221-: ie 1527, 7321, k7, uv), but I want a 27 inch scale.. so finally my question is, is it possible to use my 1527 neck to build a 27" inch scale baritone? would that work? btw, its gonna be a
fixed bridge
, not a tremolo.
Thanks,
~Mike

Re: Building/Scale Length question..
In short, no.
If you completely refretted it, changing the positions of the frets based on a 27" scale... maybe (but very, very difficult). The fret positions on that
Ibanez neck
are all based around a 25.5" scale, with 24 frets, and so the fret placement has to be exact to intonate properly. It'd be much easier, and probably cheaper, to just buy a Schecter, or maybe even a XL RG, if you can find one.
One of the guitar builder expert guys could probably give you a better and more detailed answer. I THINK it's conceivably possible... maybe with 20 frets or something, and the bridge really set back, but it's certainly not something remotely easily done.

Re: Building/Scale Length question..
^^^^correct
You could do it if you're prepared to remove the fingerboard and replace it with a 27" scale fingerboard (if you wanted to keep 24 frets you could make the new board overhang the end of the neck like on older Jem/UV necks). It's not too hard if you're fairly competent at woodwork. Look on project guitar.com for info on how to do it. Then you'd have to make a 27" scale board - you can find a fret calculator on stewmac.com to work out where the frets go. Not a straight-forward job but not impossible by any means.

Re: Building/Scale Length question..
There are two options open to you.
1. Forget your 27" scale length idea with current neck. It can be done.....but not by you. It will simply be too much work and hassle for someone with no guitar building experience. Even someone with much experience wouldn't go this route. It's just stupid. You have to strip the fretboard.....glue on new fretboard.....but still the neck won't be proper fit.....you need over hang on back.....and curve on back doesn't fit completely to propper 27" scale type neck. It's just much more simple to build all new 27" neck from the ground-up. Again.....for someone with experience that is.
So based on neck you got, you can get the other parts necessairy to build propper 25.5" scale length 7 string. Parts appear regulary on the bay.
Still not wisest option, as buying guitar in parts is always more expensive then picking up a complete second hand RG7620, or RG1527.
25.5" 7 string neck: $125
Body: $150
Edge Lo Pro 7: $150
Tuners/Controls/Backplates: $50
Top
lock nut
??: $50-90
Total -------$525
Secondhand RG7620 can be had for $300, RG1527 for $500. Secondhand RG1077XL would run for a $1000.
2. Still want to go 27" scale length route........just sell your current neck on the bay, and search for Rg1077XL on the net,....they are rare, but appear so once in a while.
Curretly building RGT-7 27" neck-through from ground-up....so yes, I know what I'm talking about.

Interesting - any current progress pics? Here are some pics of my RG7421XL-based project. I've just sprayed the clear and am waiting for it to dry before polishing and re-assembling it. The first pic is how it was when I got it - the neck was wrecked so I've built the new neck from scratch, then I stripped the body, filled in the
neck humbucker
hole and re-routed it for a single-coil, then added a
flame maple
front and stained it all.

Re: Building/Scale Length question..
Thanks all... I was 90% sure it wouldnt work but that last 10% is what brought my question on you know? lol so I was prepared for the responces, but its all good, I'll just keep it 'standard' scale. I have experience with building bodies and stuff... not necks (yet). but, thanks again!

Am currently in middle of building process. Things need to be tightend up. Short list so far:
RGT-7 QL RBB
Limba wings
Quilted maple
top
Maple/Wenge Neck Through
27" 24 frets
Cocobolo fretboard
Off-set small dots
Balducci control set-up
Edge Lo Pro 7 Trem
Dimarzio or SD pups.
This is the example I'm working off.

Nice neck you got there....here is my try on JS-7 in process. ;-)

And there is nothing better then doing you're first neck.

I needed something to go along my JS-7. ;-)~
Dreams don't have to cost a fortune, I guess. Throw in $120 worth of quality woods, the hardware of RG7620 of the bay.....some sweat and tears.......and yabba, yabba.....
Here another pic of cooking up the arm contour. LOL!

Here it's all nicely glued together.
