It's great that Ibanez now do 5 piece necks on most of the 7-string models. What's the advantage over a 3 piece neck? For strength I assume?

The advantage is most pronounced in production (less losses due to warpage) but there are some advantages for the customers as well:

I love the construction of those 5-piece Team J-Craft necks but i personally prefer the profile of the RG7620 necks.
I find the 1527 necks to have a more rounded profile rather than the more traditional Ibanez Wizard profile of old.

Although it makes sense that a 5-piece construction should be more stable i've never had any problems with the stability of my 3-piece all maple RG2027 neck or even the 7620 with the scarf-joint and the thick bubinga stripe.

I think the Team J-Craft neck construction is more down to Ibanez standardising their construction to involve less variety and less labour/costs.
Ibanez only make one type of high-end 7 (excluding the K7 neck)and one type of high end 6 string neck now.
It's particularly noticable with the current Jap-built Ibanez 6's.
All of the 'Prestige' models and the Jems all have the same basic neck.
