Carvin DC.....

Ok,

Ive never played a Carvin 7 string. I "may" sell my(mint) Ibanez RG 7620gn for one. What is the neck like (the wizard is my fav) and I want a fixed bridge one.

I've tried a Carvin 7-string. It was a nice guitar, but the neck was way too fat for me. I didn't like the stock pickups in it either. My RG 7621 is a keeper.

Re: Carvin DC.....

There have been different neck sizes on the Carvins over the years. None have been wizard-thin. I have a '92 that is pretty Ultra-like, but wider (1 11/16" nut). The late 90's-early 2000's were thicker, with big shoulders - ick. The new ones are about the same thickness, but less shoulder - they're not bad. But if you like wizards, you'd want to shave it down. I like ultras, and I'm shaving my new Carvin.

Re: Carvin DC.....

I just got my 727 today. I like the neck, but my 7620 has been gone a month so it'll still be a few weeks before I can compare them. Right off the bat though, the jumbo frets on the Carvin are ginormous! If you leave the guitar out, people will trip walking by it, they're that big. All in all the guitar seems pretty nice though; the ebony board is the blackest I've seen in years. the body is really nice, the resonance unplugged is great, and it sounds decent with the stock pickups. the licensed Floyd is also pretty OK to me. Again, I've only played it for an hour, but right off the bat it seems like a decent shred machine, and probably a decent jazz guitar, also.

Yes Carvin necks are thick..I have my Guitar tech sand them down for me it is too the MilliMeter too.. I should really ask him what it is... everytime i purchase a Carvin seven string i make sure there is no paint on the neck and that it is Tung Oiled it makes for easy saving... but for the price of a neck thru with exotic style woods you cannot beat em'...and Carvin pickups are about the worste out there they are for Country twangers...

I agree with your overall assessment, except IMO their pickups aren't bad. You know you can get their older SD model instead of the stock buckers, right?

Re: Carvin DC.....

I played a carvin 7 string at NAMM this year and I agree with everyone else here about the neck.....it felt really big and bulky.....would take a long time to sand down to be anywhere near as thin as an Ibanez. Other guitarist in my band had a Carvin endorsement years ago and in both guitars the truss rods were bad.......but they are pretty to look at.

Re: Carvin DC.....

I don't find the neck big and bulky on mine, but as I said the jumbo frets are just silly. The work on the frets is great, though. Beautiful edges, and no dead spots or buzzes that I can find so far. If I was ordering one new I think I would pay the 100 bucks or whatever and get the stainless medium frets instead. My neck is also unfinished on the back, and feels great.
