Discernable difference in RG-7621 vs. RG-7421

While shopping for Ibanez 7-strings online as well as auctions, etc., I'm finding more & more sellers who can not tell me if the item is an RG-7621 or RG-7421. It appears Ibanez didn't put the model number on the back of the headstocks, so how can one identify these models?

One quick way to tell:
7621's will say "Made in Japan" on the back of the headstock.

7421's will say "Made in Korea" on the back of the headstock.

both of these are made in japan, so they should be labeled as such

you should be able to identify them by the bridge, which is slightly different. maybe someon can post photos and more info... glen

the 7421 is a has a longer scale, 27''. this difference is very noticeable imho, a lot more than the 24.75/25.5 difference.
the 7321 is korean made and could be confused with the 7621, only in front pics, because the 7321 has TWO darker wood stripes in the neck (ie 5 piece)

btw i see in ibanez.com that the 321 has been discontinued, so maybe soon you could get it real cheap on blowout.

good luck!!!!

the 7421 XL has a longer scale. *the regular 7421 has a scale of 25.5 - the same as the 7621. *

when i get home i'll take detail pictures of my 7621 and post them.

Discernable difference in RG-7621 vs. RG-7421

That link helps, thanks Glen. For the purposes of my post I'm dealing with hardtails.
The delima is that a black RG-7421 looks exactly like a black RG-7621. I've yet to see a close up bridge/saddle comparison, though.

I just copped a white RG-7621 via ebay ($305.00!) last Friday & it needs a mate. :-)

Thanks,

j.t.

the pickup poles look different, the strap buttons are(or were) different, the rg7621's had just a maple neck while the 7421's gained a bubinga strip after they stopped using left over 7621 necks(although the leftover necks thing is a rumor i assume)..... and the bridge on the 7421 is the same one on a AX7 so if it looks like one of them and not the one on your rg7621....

I think the easiest way to discern between the 7621 and the 7421 is the pickups. The 7621 humbuckers have 12 adjustable allen-screw pole pieces. The 7421 only has one row of adjustable poles on each pickup the other row is flush with the top of the bobbin (kind of like traditional PAF-style humbuckers).

If memory serves, the 7621's pickups also have the tiny raised "DiMarzio" on them, and have black mouting plates, whereas the 7421's have no DiMarzio identification, and have *brassy-coloured mounting plates. But i could be wrong on these last two points.

If it's any color other than black or "cherry fudge", it's not a 7421. If it's grey and has an XL neck, it's a 7421XL.

Last time I remembered, the 7621 had a string-thru construction with a tunomatic type bridge while the 7421 simply had a fixed bridge. The 7621's are made in Japan as well. You'll know it's a 7621 if there are holes behind the guitar where the strings should go.

No, my RG7421 is string through as well. I don't think the RG7621, or any RG has ever come with a tune-o-matic.
