Flexibility of Five-Way Switch in 2027??

After owning my RG2027 for nearly a year now (it arrived from Rich in August of last year), I've decided to replace the stock pups with some Duncan's - specifically, a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. Question is, I'd like to keep the five way switch currently installed but want the selection options to be a little different:

1) Bridge humbucker only
2) Bridge tapped and neck tapped together
3) Bridge humbucker and neck humbucker together
4) Neck tapped only
5) Neck humbucker only

This would give me some of the cool single coil sounds I love which I currently get out of my Carvin DC727 (two HB each with a coil tap) without the need for push/pull pots.

Any idea if this is possible and [dream mode on] anyone actually know how this would be wired?

Did I mention I'm also going to perform the KJG mod at the time of installing the pups?

Thanks in advance for any info.

this is definately possible- the stock switch in the 2027 is a 24 pole switch, which gives you insane amounts of flexibility in designing a switching scheme.

how to do it is another question. you say "tapped," but do you want the coil toward the bridge or the coil toward the neck? i would recommend you sit down with pencil and paper and design the entire scheme out.

you will need to know which wires on the Duncan go to which coils, and which of those two is "start" and "finish." my notes say Green-->Red in the screw head pole piece coil, and Black-->White in the slug pole piece coil. since both pickups are Duncan, the magnet poles of each coil and the winding direction [clockwise or counterclockwise] are the same and shouldn't matter. you get a "humbucking" or hum canceling pair when the winding direction and the magnet polarities on 2 coils are both opposite.

if you design it out, you can figure out which wires to have connected or not connected in each of the five switch positions. then you figure out how to have the switch do it, and you're set. some trial and error is often necessary even after the best designs - plug the guitar in and tap on the pickups with a screwdriver to see if the right coils are on.

if all that sounds insanely confusing, you might want to have someone else design the wiring for you, but once you understand how humbuckers and coil cut combinations work, you can design most any combination.

Nope,

I believe the stock Ibanez 5-way is in the number 4 position, the neck humbucker in parallel - not tapped.

my bad, on a seven, neck humbucker is parallel in #2, and #4 is both inside coils, a la john petrucci. I wouldn't object to a tapped neck, although the parallel sound is quite nice and doesn't hum, to boot. and #4 on this setup is a KILLER rhythm tone with mediumish gain. So, i'm happy with stock.

I really love that single coil twang though and with two humbuckers, the only way to approximate it is with the neck tapped. Great rhythm and lead tone.

If I end up getting a 2027 I'm going to put in a push-pull switch to split the neck pickup because I like all the stock positions as well as a true single coil neck sound.

Whoa, you getting Duncans? A bit expensive at $140 a pop. I was thinking of getting a Duncan Custom for the bridge if I get that 2027 (which is looking brighter every moment) but the price seems so high. Let me know how they work out.

I bought my JB and Jazz Duncans from Music 123 and only paid about $73 each.

Still haven't done the job though as I've been preoccupied with a lot so far this summer. I'm looking forward to it though. Until then, I'm really digging the Carvin...
